not directly related to XMPP but there was a dev community that I was keeping an eye on from afar, on Matrix, and it recently got drown in spam, leading to a massive exodus to discord. I wonder if there are any lessons to be learned from that or reasons why discord would be less susceptible to spam

it's so bad the default is discord is not to allow private messages from anyone unless their already your friends, and even then your private messages are screened by ""ai""

that's just a function of its size. Matrix is worse relative to its size
