not everybody can run a server. I can, but that's besides the point. This sort of thing really should be regulated
-
alfred
Why? It is a private service
-
nuegia.net
I mean bigtech
-

Discord is truly ridiculous on their privacy invasion.

If not everyone can run a server then we, the people who design and write these systems, have failed and must do better until everyone can. Giving up on everyone running a server is what got us here.
-
worlio.com
However to avoid using anything you can't manage yourself is insane and unrealistic.
-
worlio.com
I think everyone running their own server is ridiculous and defeats the purpose of servers.

Email is a mess. Why? Everyone ran their own email server and so we started piling crap onto it to make it strict so the bad people running their own server wouldn't get their way.
-
moparisthebest
Lol no that is not anywhere near why email is bad
-
worlio.com
It's oversimplifying but that isn't really the point.

Stretching out decentralization enough to where every server is unique only creates trust problems. Manage what you can but don't feel bad using services that don't distrust you for refraining to disclose your personal information. There is a line to draw.
-
nuegia.net
not everybody wants to run a server either, nor should they have to.
-
nuegia.net
people who don't want to maintain it shouldn't
-
worlio.com
Not everyone has the time or patience for it, not everyone knows what they are doing.
-
moparisthebest
Again you are naming things that shouldn't exist
-
worlio.com
Servers?
-
moparisthebest
Remember 30 years ago when no one could run computers either, now everyone has 99999 in their life
-
worlio.com
And they don't know a damn thing about them.

There is no reason installing a server should be more complicated than installing an app from the app store, it only still is because we've dropped the ball
-
worlio.com
I do not think everyone should have a server.
-
moparisthebest
I do
-
worlio.com
Well this is where we disagree. I'm sure there are many server-less services you can enjoy.
-
moparisthebest
We don't have to agree :) I don't want serverless, XMPP is perfect

> There is no reason installing a server should be more complicated than installing an app from the app store, it only still is because we've dropped the ball yeah it should. Not everything needs to be or should devolve into a content consumption glass brick. ↺

If you want everybody to host their own servers, it isn't servers anymore, it is peer-to-peer clients.

A diverse level of centralization is good.
-
moparisthebest
Centralization is always bad

worlio.com
Are you a communist?

-
nuegia.net

-
worlio.com
Staying on topic? In this MUC? In your dreams. What is the next topic besides being XMPP service operators?
-
kali [she/they]

worlio.com
Nothing of importance.
