I don't know how else to say this, but I don't understand why it's considered acceptable for ''professional'' linux distributions like Debian/Devuan to just not be able to shutdown if the system uses full disk encryption. Like, it's just not an edgecase they worked out... over how many years it's been around. The official documentation is to just accept this and press the hardware reset/hold the power button any time you need to reboot or power down.

  2. nuegia.net

I get that the root filesystem can't be unmounted under normal system conditions but shutting down isn't an uncommon edgecase

  3. nuegia.net

consider the situation you might not have unlimited energy and need to power down some subsystems that aren't necessary in a lower power situation. You go to power a secure system down, it goes through the shutdown runlevel killing all the processes and then it just hangs there, waiting indefinitely for the luks crypt layer to close for the root filesystem consuming energy doing nothing

  4. Martin

    ?

  5. Martin

I use FDE for many years with Debian and I never had issues shutting down.

  6. jonas’

    huh?

  7. jonas’

    yeah

  8. jonas’

    me too

  9. jonas’

I'll admit that it got trickier to actually get a system to power off cleanly with systemd (sometimes it just hangs for minutes or longer shutting down some toy database service I might've installed for some tests), but it definitely isn't an issue related to FDE

  10. nuegia.net

    I'm not even using systemd

  11. jonas’

    on debian?

  12. jonas’

maybe that's why it doesn't work for you then.

  13. nuegia.net

    devuan

  14. jonas’

    I wouldn't consider Devuan a professional distribution.d

  15. jonas’

    I wouldn't consider Devuan a professional distribution.

  16. nuegia.net

    why

  17. jonas’

I can't phrase that without violating room rules.

    😂 7
  18. neox

    > I can't phrase that without violating room rules. 😂

  19. nuegia.net

you can private message it to me

  20. kali [she/they]

    > I can't phrase that without violating room rules. 😂

  21. TheCoffeMaker

    > I can't phrase that without violating room rules. 😂

  22. TheCoffeMaker

to say it politely, devuan is not under Debian quality assurance processes

  23. TheCoffeMaker

to say it politely, devuan is not under Debian's quality assurance processes

  24. nuegia.net

it is more or less Debian without systemd

  25. nuegia.net

and I wouldn't have to use a fork if Debian's QA wasn't lowered to shoehorn systemd into it against the will of the community

  26. nuegia.net

which the way it was handled was explicitly against the Debian CSRG

  27. nuegia.net

which the way it was handled was explicitly against the Debian DSG

  28. nuegia.net

which the way it was handled was explicitly against the Debian DSC

  29. nuegia.net

which was also all for nothing as the creator abandoned it and went to go work for M$ anyways

  30. nuegia.net

    split debian apart for nothing

  31. moparisthebest

nuegia.net: shutting down/rebooting with FDE has worked no problem for me using systemd with Arch for 8+ years and Debian and Ubuntu before that, sounds like you need to fix your system

  32. nuegia.net

It's just unfortunate there's no other Linux out there I know of that isn't based on or red-hat flavored

  33. moparisthebest

Arch Linux, I just said it

  34. nuegia.net

It's just unfortunate there's no other Linux out there I know of that isn't based on or red-hat flavored, that's also stable

  35. jonas’

nuegia.net, I specifically avoided that discussion because of exactly this off-topic.

  36. jonas’

we'll not have distro wars here.

  37. nuegia.net

    distro wars?

  38. nuegia.net

I'm not going to ""war"" with someone because they use a different Linux distro, I'm merely asking for suggestions

  39. nuegia.net

    that would be ridiculous

  40. jonas’

nuegia.net, this is close enough for me to mind, please don't drag this into being a nomenclature or wording discussion.

  41. jonas’

I think you got the feedback on your original question (there seem to be many FDE users with no issues of properly powering off a system, which suggests there might be something to fix on your end---but that is something to bring up elsewhere, e.g. in your distro's support channels).

  42. moparisthebest

So let's not bring up how systemd got in Debian or where the maintainer works if you need help getting your system rebooting I'm in a few MUCs that will help you, it's not a limitation

  43. nuegia.net

It's a known issue in the Debian bugtracker since 2015, with some duplicates. Unfortunately the official answer is just run systemd

  44. moparisthebest

Sounds like a limitation of your init system then

  45. jonas’

    moparisthebest, please stop engaging.

  46. jonas’

    it's off-topic for this channel.

  47. nuegia.net

    test

  48. nuegia.net

    sorry, gajim glitched hold on

  49. nuegia.net

I don't know what's going on but i can't type new messages anymore only correct

  50. moparisthebest

xmpp:selfhost@chat.moparisthe.best?join if you wish, I'll be there later and will try to help

  51. nuegia.net

    hold on

  52. nuegia.net

    ok

  53. nuegia.net

    test

  54. nuegia.net

idk what just happened, but i didn't mean to change the previous message. It said it's been an open issue in the debian bugtracker since 2015 but the official debian answer (as in from a @debian.org email address) is more or less just run systemd.

  55. nuegia.net

If i wanted to run redhat I would have just done that. But unfortunately, a lot of stable distros (as in not rolling release, backported fixes, etc) with also a lot of users so bugs get found and worked out is either redhat, some fork of redhat, or debian based

  56. jonas’

nuegia.net, consider this the last warning on the continuation of this topic.

  57. nuegia.net

jonas’, if you don't have anything to say or something nice please just stay silent on the matter

  58. jonas’

nuegia.net, I cannot, because you are continuing an off-topic conversation and as a room moderator it is my duty to call that out and stop it.

  59. nuegia.net

Are you having a bad day today?

  60. jonas’

nuegia.net, I'm just paying attention to this room for one.

  61. jonas’

nuegia.net, I'm just paying attention to this room for once.

  62. nuegia.net

Well, I don't appreciate the way I'm being treated.

  63. syn.rip admin

maybe have distro wars in cybersnoot@conference.nuegia.net

  64. syn.rip admin

anyways, does anyone have information or resources regarding screen sharing over XMPP, and if there is a way to implement such a thing?

  65. nuegia.net

no, we can't because your banned from my entire network for ddosing and harassment

  66. nuegia.net

    why are you even here?

  67. nuegia.net

    you know, criminal activity...

  68. syn.rip admin

    ok

  69. kali [she/they]

    > ok lmfao

  70. roughnecks

Is there a way to know if a JID is black listed in RTBL? I received a private message from someone who (said) tried to join mucs on my server but it's like he's banned. No one banned him manually but I'm running the RTLB module

  71. roughnecks

and I found this: https://nixnet.services/ (same domain as the user contacting me)

  72. roughnecks

he's pasting me (pieces of) messages from a couple mucs where he is not in (or I cannot see him in the userslist). wtf

  73. nuegia.net

    wtf
