One can register nicknames just like in irc so others can't take it. But since you're here with that name now, it's likely not that.

Huh, is the Bifrost instance hosted by aria-net.org down or is it just me? I've "plumbed" two Matrix rooms to XMPP rooms yesterday, so I could use XMPP. When I tried to "plumb" the third, it not longer reacted.

I can see it's inviting the puppets on the Matrix side if I try to join directly and not via the plumbed room, but the puppets never join. Nothing ever happens on the XMPP side.

Also, are there other public instances? I only need one for a while, I'm planning to set up my own, perhaps at the weekend, just need something I can use for now. 🤔

Maybe they also have rate limiting? I did the three plumbing things within just a couple minutes.

I think it is only on Matrix, which makes reporting a bit hard when the bridge is down.

But the bridge is kinda unreliable and no there is no other public instance that I am aware off.

I wish it was less work to set up. It's literally hundreds of parameters.

If anyone got a working setup and would like to share the config, so that I can get it running far quicker by adapting it, I'd be glad. :)

Can't wait for ejabberd to get more updates to it's Matrix gateway. It works well already, just few things missing for my use-case (mainly media and room persistence that makes me lose access to private rooms when the server restarts)

f_: cheogram is one client that registers a MUC nick when you join/bookmark a muc and doesn't drop the registration unless you explicitly leave
