XMPP Service Operators - 2026-01-13

  1. based.pt

Masked Lilith [queer-spark.org]: hello, can you send me a DM? bacalhau@based.pt

  2. Guus

Folks, I am doing that thing again. With FOSDEM just around the corner and the XMPP ecosystem preparing to show off its size and diversity, I would really appreciate your help once more.

  3. Guus

If you run an XMPP server and are willing and able, please consider registering it with the XMPP network graph at https://xmppnetwork.goodbytes.im/

  4. Guus

The more servers that participate, the better we can demonstrate how vibrant, decentralized, and diverse the XMPP network really is. Many thanks to everyone who has done this before, and to anyone who is able to contribute this time around.

  5. edhelas

    I'm doing my part!

  6. sezuan

Nice, wasn't aware of that. I added mine, too.

  7. ademir

    Me 3

  8. erebion

I also just configured that. Thanks.

  9. icebound.dev

edhelas, didn't know you are here, I saw you are doing a talk on movim, can't wait to see it!!! Hope to see you at the XMPP stand too? Unsure your plans :)

  10. icebound.dev

Would be cool to meet more of the XMPP folks, met many of them last year

  11. icebound.dev

    > If you run an XMPP server and are willing and able, please consider registering it with the XMPP network graph at https://xmppnetwork.goodbytes.im/ > I dont have pubsub enabled so I can't help :p

  12. icebound.dev

    plus I am mid migrations

  13. edhelas

    > edhelas, didn't know you are here, I saw you are doing a talk on movim, can't wait to see it!!! > > Hope to see you at the XMPP stand too? Unsure your plans :) I heard that the XMPP stand is The Place to Be at the FOSDEM so I might be around :p

  14. erebion

Will also say hello there, if trains are running

  15. erebion

Right now looks like they might be on strike

  16. icebound.dev

    erebion, which country?

  17. icebound.dev

    France?

  18. icebound.dev

    > I heard that the XMPP stand is The Place to Be at the FOSDEM so I might be around :p :)

  19. erebion

    > erebion, which country? Belgium

  20. icebound.dev

    > > erebion, which country? > Belgium Ah right, I am coming via Eurostar so I should be fine. Wish you luck!

  21. icebound.dev

I have a talk at FOSDEM as well, should really start preparing for it

  22. erebion

    >> Belgium > Ah right, I am coming via Eurostar so I should be fine. Wish you luck! If the workers are on strike, the train might not be able to pass the border

  23. icebound.dev

    > >> Belgium > > Ah right, I am coming via Eurostar so I should be fine. Wish you luck! > If the workers are on strike, the train might not be able to pass the border well that will ruining my fucking day :(

  24. erebion

Let's hope the companies will just accept and there'll be fair pay

  25. erebion

    Then there'll be no strike

  26. erebion

    >> Ah right, I am coming via Eurostar so I should be fine. Wish you luck! > If the workers are on strike, the train might not be able to pass the border (Someone has to run the control rooms and switch the signals)

  27. icebound.dev

    > >> Ah right, I am coming via Eurostar so I should be fine. Wish you luck! > > If the workers are on strike, the train might not be able to pass the border > (Someone has to run the control rooms and switch the signals) well not 100% of workers are unionised, so I am sure there will still be staff, just minimal service.

  28. icebound.dev

Some German trains also cross the border, I dont think DB will be happy if their rolling stock got trapped in Belgium

  29. erebion

And minimal service means disruptions, so I have booked a hotel I can cancel

  30. icebound.dev

its Eurostar, theres always disruptions :p

  31. icebound.dev

my talk slot is the last slot on Saturday in the BSD devroom, so as long as I get to Brussels before then, I am good :p

  32. erebion

    > Some German trains also cross the border, I dont think DB will be happy if their rolling stock got trapped in Belgium Which is a good way to make the strike expensive to BNCF if you're on strike, to force them to rather pay more for the workers ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  33. icebound.dev

I am taking the 7:04 from London on 31st

  34. icebound.dev

if theres no delays I should be able to get to FOSDEM by 10:30

  35. erebion

You'll neee to get to the university as well, I doubt you'll make it before 11:00

  36. erebion

Anyway, I hope trains will run

  37. erebion

Otherwise there'll be a lot of room on the hallways for everyone else, lol

  38. icebound.dev

    > You'll neee to get to the university as well, I doubt you'll make it before 11:00 30 mins from Brussels-Midi/Zuid isn't impossible

  39. icebound.dev

I was saying best case, I was prepared to miss the beginning of FOSDEM this year as I dont really go to talks anyways and its far cheaper than getting there the day before on a more expensive eurostar ticket + booking an extra night accom

  40. erebion

Perhaps we should use fosdem-2026@tardis.erebion.eu and not spam further in here

  41. icebound.dev

    agreed. Happy to join

  42. icebound.dev

    > Perhaps we should use fosdem-2026@tardis.erebion.eu and not spam further in here hmm I cant connect to your server...

  43. erebion

    huh, why?

  44. erebion

I was just able to join from another server

  45. erebion

I'm able to join from two different servers, but Gajim complains about an "invalid address" unless I add xmpp: in front

  46. erebion

    fosdem-2026@tardis.erebion.eu

  47. erebion retracted a previous message, but it's unsupported by your client.

  48. erebion

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  49. icebound.dev

erebion, you dont have STARTLS for S2S

  50. icebound.dev

and my lazy arse doesn't have DirectTLS enabled on Openfire

  51. icebound.dev

back when I installed this XMPP server it was considered legacy

  52. erebion

    Oh :D

  53. erebion

Yeah, I only use Direct TLS, less rountrips, more efficient

  54. erebion

So far I haven't noticed any issue, everyone I talk to seems to support Direct TLS

  55. icebound.dev

most software supports both by default

  56. icebound.dev

my server is being replaced anyways so I am not going to go fixing my config now

  57. icebound.dev

in ~1 month time it will be migrated.

  58. Masked Lilith [queer-spark.org]

    > Masked Lilith [queer-spark.org]: hello, can you send me a DM? > bacalhau@based.pt Sure. I'll have to do it from a secondary account since that domain is on the jabboratory blocklist
