XMPP Service Operators - 2026-05-07

Having trouble finding info on whether XMPP works properly in China. Ideally, a Chinese user would be able to log in with an account on my server outside of China and operate as normal. Otherwise, a JID registered on a Chinese server, but able to federate to my server and participate in multi user chats. Anyone have any experience crossing the Great Wall of China? From what I hear, they've been cracking down on VPNs and blocking US company IPs (homie can no longer access PayPal as of a few weeks ago), so hopefully it just works "raw," as one could say

No idea of the current situation, but a few months ago I was told it isn't an issue.

That's more promising than info I'm finding from 6 or so years ago

is DNSSEC / DANE not an XEP? Doesn't appear to be... or would that be covered by SRV over TLS (0368)? Pretty sure Monal supports DNS entry authentication, yea? I'll have to charge my iPad to check, unless someone knows before I get around to doing that.

  5. singpolyma

No it's not a XEP because it has nothing to do with XMPP

  6. Ben

makes sense, clearly I'm spoiled by XEPs making it super easy to check what features clients support to the point where I want every client feature to have an XEP 😂 and spoiled by Monocles, without a doubt

  7. singpolyma

Indeed. There should be no correlation between features and XEPs really. Some XEPs are a dozen features and some features are a dozen (or zero) XEPs

yup. "Best Practices" XEPs are the unsung heroes. I think I've got the server about as China-ready as it's going to get at this point, I'll likely set up I2P as a fallback too. All that's really left is to get the Chinese homie plugged in and see what happens 🤷‍♂️

Let us know how it goes.
