One uninformed guess at a possibility: If XMPP becomes popular for samizdat, the domain could be used as a decoy, or as the official government-approved provider (with added tracking of who's talking to who). I don't know enough (anything) about Romania's political situation, so I don't know whether that's plausible in this case.

yeah, I use it because it is a no-brainer; it's boring but feels "official" for anyone discovering xmpp for the first time and looking for a server. We had the same thing with mastodon.nz when elon took over twitter; there were others but we got most of the influx from local users looking for somewhere to set up.

For me, domains like this are misleading for newcomers and considering jabber.de, they then complain about the ecosystem instead of the actual problem; xmpp does just not work like the Meta communication platform - only this makes it a real alternative

its a common format, even on matrix theres a lot of matrix.tld servers

It's totally common 4 character tld that have any meaning are horded. Names are rare and an investment for some companies. There are a handful 3 chars .de domains free at all, including all combos with numbers. So it seems normal for me that no xmpp domain exist anymore

I think the network would benefit from being invite only, or at least more restricred

that works for us, my server is similar to an invite tree right now and where the lines meet we see beautiful things.

were never going to "beat spam" but we can still have a good time without laying the foundations for what email turned into.
