XMPP Summit - 2023-02-04

  1. goffi

I've added myself for a demo/talk around Libervia at 16h00.

  2. Syndace

the booth doesn't appear on nav.fosdem.org :/ where is it again?

  3. Syndace

Found it, bulding K upstairs if anybody is wondering

  4. Daniel

did you search for something something realtime?

  5. Daniel

    instead of xmpp

  6. Syndace

No, I searched for XMPP but I should have searched for realtime lounge

  8. emus

    quality is aweful 😬

  9. Kev

If that’s the view from the Real-time Lounge, things have changed a bit since I was last there.

  10. emus

    :)

  11. NotMtth

    Based

  12. emus

Ups, now I am at tge arichecture campus^^

  13. airjump

I wish you a great time at the #Fosdem. Since some people have asked where and which link the XMPP chat has, I have generated a QR code. https://ruhr.social/@ict4f/109806798951012250

  14. airjump

Is there anyone who can post some pictures from the #FOSDEM #XMPP?

  16. airjump

    > Arne‎ Thank you very much.

  17. airjump

I found this article. https://www.isode.com/whitepapers/low-bandwidth-xmpp.html Has anyone ever done XMPP over shortwave (radio)? Or experience in this area?

  18. Menel

    The NATO 😄

  19. airjump

    > Menel‎ Would love to set something up for a small community as an emergency network. (Based on: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizens_band_radio)

  20. airjump

Have a great summit at #FOSDEM bye

  21. Kev

    > I found this article. https://www.isode.com/whitepapers/low-bandwidth-xmpp.html Has anyone ever done XMPP over shortwave (radio)? Or experience in this area? Isn't HF shortwave?

  22. airjump

    > Kev‎ Yes it is transmitted via HF / short wave. Unfortunately I do not have more information.

  23. Kev

I don't understand the question then - the article you linked was about Isode doing XMPP over HF (and satcom).

  24. Menel

Always when I'm reading things like this, I think it is sad there is no compression for xmpp anymore. I alywas think good compression without compromise of security should be possible. Best would be a modern text optimized algorithm

  25. Menel

Maybe even with a pre trained library for all the common xml stuff every message contains

  26. jonas’

that one binary encoding of XML, which I cannot remember the name of right now, may be sensible

  27. jonas’

    but it's also unimplementainium

  28. Kev

    EXI?

  29. jonas’

    yes, that

  30. Kev

And most people doing XMPP over HF are going to have compression in the network layer.

  31. jonas’

compression on encrypted XMPP streams is not going to work well though

  32. jonas’

(but encrypted XMPP streams in ham HF communication aren't a thing anyway)

  33. Kev

The encryption's in the network layer too.

  34. Kev

I didn't say ham, of course.

  35. jonas’

(I know you didn't, airjump suggested something similar tho)

  36. Kev

Right. What I mean is - everyone doing XMPP over HF of which I'm aware is not ham, and has encryption at the network layer. I'm aware ham users probably don't have hardware crypto boxes like those sitting around.

  37. Menel

    > that one binary encoding of XML, which I cannot remember the name of right now, may be sensible > > but it's also unimplementainium I thought you meant funxmpp 😁

  38. tallship@jabber.org

Is this bridged to a Matrix room, perhaps?

  39. ralphm

Not sure. Would there be demand for this? (Serious question)

  40. emus

Syndace, vanitasvitae and me are at GSoC Meet-up today. Thanks to ralphm`s kind donor I can also show who we are :-) (of course Syndace has one already, too!)

  41. moparisthebest

Can't legally do data over CB in the USA, nor is encryption over HAM bands legal, but you can do data and encryption over MURS without a license

  42. Daniel

MattJ, intosi@ik.nu the thing I was remembering about pushing disco items in a message was this: https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0050.html#announce

  43. ralphm

    😳

  44. emus

Thanks everyone for the nice day today, at Fosdem and the evening!

  45. emus

folks still at brewdog discussing specs and xmpp 😊🍻
