In my first train. The journey officially started for me 🚉

Summit 28 Location Info: If you can bring a multiplug, that would help to ensure noone runs out of power 🔌

    > I agree that movim and/or libervia showcasing mastodon posts via libervia AP bridge and matrix rooms via slidge (or bifrost, but no fancy features like reactions or rich replies) would look appealing (but I am heavily biased towards finding gateways super cool, it's not a secret ^^). Ofc offline video fallback is a must because connectivity is not guaranteed, I agree. And it was never tested with Movim on my side

Hello! Hope everyone is on their way to the Summit without any inconvenience 🤞🏻 Quick question: around what time should I show up to the web conference tomorrow? Is it still okay for you to set that up? Wish I could have made it in person but not possible this year 😕 Thank you in advance!

  5. emus

*Traveling towards the Summit 28 from tomorrow?* Good time to pre-read agenda suggestions and add yours: https://wiki.xmpp.org/web/Conferences/Summit_28#Agenda (Remote joiners too ✌️)

  7. Daniel

Rémi: probably around 10am Brussels time

  8. Daniel

And yes we will do our best to set this up

  9. Rémi

    Amazing 😀 Thanks!

  10. emus

    > Rémi: probably around 10am Brussels time Dont we start 09:00 am or am I mixing timezones

  11. Daniel

Traditionally we have slowly trickled into the room from 9am onwards... I don't think we have ever actually started at 9am

    👍 1
  12. Daniel

And setting up the streaming takes time too

  13. Edwin

9:00 is usually proving to be hopelessly optimistic as a starting time.

  14. Daniel

We only ever tell the in person participants to show up at 9am in the hopes for a 10am start

  15. Edwin

    Daniel ninja'ed me.

  16. Kev

A thought occurred to me yesterday - we spend thousands every year on the in-person aspect of the Summit, I wonder if it makes sense to look at what it would take to make remote participation closer to on-par. If e.g. one year’s worth of IRL summit money could be spent to buy equipment that makes remote close to on-par with being there for all future summits, that might not be daft. Too late for this year, naturally, but possibly something to consider.

Too late for this year, naturally, but possibly something to consider. I would also advocate to have something like summer online-only summit (could also be just one day) to be more inclusive because there are many people not able to participate ever. It could also be an online follow-up to the physical summit.

  18. Kev

I think online-only summits are a different train of thought to trying to make in person summits work for remotes.

  19. Kev

Possibly also valuable, but not what I was suggesting :)

  20. Guus

There may be value in having everyone join in the same manner. That prevents the possibility of there being adhoc in room only discussions. I've never even attended such an event, so I'm not sure if it's at all practical.

  21. Kev

    IETF microphone queues?

  22. Daniel

We can make 'improving remote participation for in person summits' a topic at summit. I actually have some ideas but I just didn't find the time to suggest them before this summit.

  23. Daniel

    > IETF microphone queues? This basically would have been my suggestion

  24. Daniel

But this also changes the in-room atmosphere

  25. Kev

Well, when I’m chairing I generally do something akin to the microphone queues already, but without the movement.

  26. Kev

Of course not everyone is good at not jumping back in to respond to stuff.

  27. Daniel

I don't want to imply that you easily overlook people in the chat. But having a queue bot in the chat would give the same chances to remote and local participants. Plus passing a mic around (or walking up to the mic) might significantly improve the audio quality for remote participants

    👍 1
  28. Kev

I was particularly wondering about whether spending a bit of money would make life better. e.g. would having a half dozen webcams covering the room, or similarly multiple mics, or a projector dedicated to remotes, or ...

    👍 1
  29. Kev

    > I don't want to imply that you easily overlook people in the chat. I wasn’t taking it as a criticism.

  30. Kev

Yes, a queue bot that’s shared between chat and the room would level the field somewhat.

  31. Kev

Although I note that what I’m usually doing isn’t strictly FIFOing - I’m trying to predict what people are going to be contributing, and trying to group sensibly (e.g. if I think someone’s going to contribute to the current point, I’ll try to slip that in ahead of the person I think is going to move in a different direction).

  32. Kev

It’s possibly a sad reflection of our predictability that pattern matching like that somewhat works a lot of the time :)

  33. Daniel

We might not even need to spend any money. I do have recording equipment and I'm sure others have as well

    👍 1
  34. Daniel

We just need to decide that we want it

  35. Rémi

FYI, I’ll be participating remotely but I’d be fine with subpar audio/video. If I can get most of what you’re saying it’ll already be a lot better than not being there at all 💁🏻‍♂️

  36. Kev

If we can *not* spend money, fantastic. I was just realising the massive difference bnetwee our commitment to local and remote, to the tune of thousands of currency units a year.

  38. emus

    > Possibly also valuable, but not what I was suggesting :) Yes, I just added another suggestion.

  39. emus

    > Yes, a queue bot that’s shared between chat and the room would level the field somewhat. A simple solution could be that one person (can change over the day) is responsible to check the chat. Chat participants just raise their hand. Those are enumerated anyway. That would be the lowest effort.

  40. Kev

That's what we already do, isn't it?

  41. emus

Kev: ok, wasnt sure anymore how it used to be done. Did we also provide remote participants a slot in the welcome round? Another good thing to do in hybrid events is, if possible, to have the remote online people always present in some part of the screen. That increases visibility.

  42. Kev

    > Did we also provide remote participants a slot in the welcome round? Very often the remote setup isn't complete until past this point in proceedings.

    👍 1
  43. Kev

    > have the remote online people always present in some part of the screen Yes, that's what I was suggesting earlier with the idea of a dedicated projector for remotes.

  44. emus

Ah okay. Yeah, I support to improve this

  45. Daniel

Are the trams operating? I'm wondering if I'll have better luck trying the trams to get from gare du Nord to our hotel

  46. Daniel

Or if I should take a train to central

  47. emus

Thats my connection if anyone intersects with it: 13:57 Hamburg-Harburg (Andén 3) 🚄 ICE 613 → München Hbf 17:53 Köln Hbf (Andén 6) 18:44 Köln Hbf (Andén 9) 🚄 EST 9486 20:35 Bruxelles Midi

  48. Edwin

Guus and I just checked in at the NH.

  49. Link Mauve

Hi, does anyone but goffi has a spare sofa in their room for me? He’s likely ill. :s

  50. Daniel

Anyone want to go for dinner?

  51. Daniel

(not too long from now, maybe)

  52. emus

I think Im out as I wont arrive before 20:30

  53. emus

But let me know if there is a gathering later

  54. Arne

I'll also arrive a bit too late

  55. Holger

I'd need an hour or so.

  56. MattJ

    Dinner sounds good

  57. celeste

debacle, jp and i are at kitsune burgers atm. may meet up if there is something later today.

  58. Link Mauve

    Dinner seems interesting!

  59. Link Mauve

    celeste, this one? https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/4413284007

  60. celeste

Link Mauve, i think so, yes. but we have already eaten and are probably going to leave and get waffles soon

  61. Link Mauve

    Heh. :)

  62. Thilo Molitor

    Dinner in ~1h sounds good

  63. neox

    Link Mauve: I might

  64. neox

    (Have a spare sofa)

  65. Link Mauve

    Oh!

  66. MattJ

    I'm in the lobby

  67. celeste

    > I'm in the lobby Are you at the NH grand sablon?

  68. MattJ

    Yeah

  69. balejk

At what time do you expect to start preparing the venue tomorrow? If all goes well, I should be able to come early and help

  70. emus

balejk: As early as possible I would say. But that maily relies on ralphm I believe. I will be there from 8:15 to ensure everything goes fine with the host. Coffee/tea will be served from 09:00 am, if thats a requirement for you :-)

  71. ralphm

I know nothing, will be parking the van tomorrow morning

  72. balejk

emus, great, I will arrive as soon as I can then :-)

  73. emus

Its your first time, so just relax. helping out is very kind of you!

  74. debacle

Jakub, celeste and I already had early dinner. If people meet later to drink coffee or even beer, one or the other of us might join.

  75. emus

    Are any folks gathering somewhere?

  76. Fishbowler

    > balejk: As early as possible I would say. I heard, up channel, I think, that arrived for 9 for start at 10. I assumed that included both small talk and setup

    👍 1
  77. emus

balejk: yes, you will likely able to meet and greet XMPP people over a coffee 😊

  78. emus

Which remote session should we use? I can create a big blue botton call

  79. Daniel

I think in previous years we just used jitsi meet. We don't need much. We have a MUC for chat anyway

  80. emus

Do we know which server we had? Would be great to have the link in the wiki early.

  81. Daniel

meet.jit.si but we can use something else this year

  82. lissine

I've announced a start from 09:00 am as from then also beverages are served and we have decent time to meet and prepare. I suggest let's be on time and get most out of it. Finishing earlier is usally the easier thing to do.
