XSF Discussion - 2012-02-22

  1. Dave Cridland

I wondr if this client will be good enough to hold a meeting with.

  2. Dave Cridland

("wondr" - how very Web 2.0)

  3. Dave Cridland

    Ashley, Hiya.

  4. Ashley Roach

    hey

  5. Dave Cridland

    ~17 minutes to go.

  6. Dave Cridland

On my tablet, so heaven only knows if the XMPP client will hold up. :-)

  7. Dave Cridland

6 minutes to go. Two board members. I should start poking people, I suppose.

  8. bear

in case I get pulled by the meeting i'm lurking in now: +1 to dave as chair, +1 to alex, stpeter

  9. bear

    but I'm here currently :)

  10. Dave Cridland

Not that we need to vote for Chair. :-)

  11. Dave Cridland

    Whee. Four directors. Quoratastic.

  12. Florian

    hey all

  13. Dave Cridland

And I think it's time to start.

  14. Dave Cridland

So, my understanding is that Alex is happy to continue as Secretary for another session.

  15. Kev

3minutes by my watch, but anyway.

  16. Dave Cridland

    Oh, is Peter here yet?

  17. Ashley Roach

    maybe this will hold

  18. stpeter

    hi Ashley

  19. Ashley Roach

tap tap, can you hear me?

  20. Ashley Roach

    yay!

  21. Dave Cridland

    Ah, perfect.

  22. Ashley Roach

    i think adium got confused

  23. stpeter

I'm here but on a W3C conference call related to the IETF IRI WG -- always fun

  24. Dave Cridland

So, stpeter - are you willing to continue as Executive Director?

  25. Dave Cridland

stpeter - and did I get it right that you'realso Treasurer? And do you want to be?

  26. stpeter

yes, I can continue as Executive Director -- and I'll have more time for that after March 30

  27. Dave Cridland

    Hi Chris.

  28. cchris434

    hello

  29. stpeter

I think it would be good to discuss whether we can find someone else for the Treasurer role (although I'm happy to continue with that, we might want more checks and balances)

  30. Florian

    great

  31. Dave Cridland

    Do we have any candidates?

  32. stpeter

    not really

  33. Dave Cridland

If not, then we could post to the list requesting volunteers, if you'd like.

  34. stpeter

but we might want to discuss that

  35. stpeter

I really don't mind keeping those books

  36. stpeter

and it probably helps to have someone in the States for banking purposes

  37. Dave Cridland

That thought had occured to me.

  38. stpeter

Jack Moffitt volunteered once upon a time, but in fact we never got him set up for check-writing privileges

  39. Dave Cridland

I'm happy either way, but the more people involved the better, as a rule, so if you're happy to hand that role onto someone else, I think that'd be great.

  40. Dave Cridland

But obviously, we need to find someone we want to do the role.

  41. stpeter

    right

  42. Florian

    right

  43. Florian

and like Peter said, preferably someone in the US

  44. Dave Cridland

So does anyone have any objections to deferring the Treasurer [re-]appointment for a week or two, giving us time to go recruit?

  45. bear

+1 to defer - let's beat the bushes to find a suspect

  46. cchris434

    agreed

  47. Florian

    _1

  48. Florian

    eh +1

  49. stpeter

    "suspect" :)

  50. Ashley Roach

    +1

  51. Dave Cridland

Right, OK, I think that's unanimous, then.

  52. Florian

    so next up, FOSDEM report?

  53. Dave Cridland

So, Executive Director. No members have approached me, at any rate, complaining about Peter. Is everyone happy with him continuing on?

  54. Dave Cridland

Florian, We need to formally appoint the other two officiers first.

  55. Florian

    oh right:)

  56. Florian

    +1 for Peter as ED

  57. Dave Cridland

I'm in favour of Peter continuing as ED, too.

  58. bear

+1 for continuing to torment Peter

  59. cchris434

    agreed +1

  60. Dave Cridland

    Ashley?

  61. Dave Cridland

And while Ashley gets his connection back... Is everyone happy with Alex continuing as XSF Secretary?

  62. Florian

    I am.

  63. Dave Cridland

    Anyone else?

  64. cchris434

    +1

  65. bear

    +1

  66. Ashley Roach

    +1

  67. Ashley Roach

    sorry — multitasking

  68. Dave Cridland

OK, so both ED and Secretary positions are filled for the next year (or so).

  69. Dave Cridland

    So onto FOSDEM.

  70. Dave Cridland

Did eveyone read through the discussions on the members list?

  71. Florian

    yes, more or less

  72. stpeter

I haven't read the last few messages yet

  73. stpeter logs into the xmpp.org WordPress installation

  74. Dave Cridland

The major outstanding thing is there's a suggestion that we should write a blog post saying how wonderful the whole thing was.

  75. Zash

    :D

  76. ashleyroach

    that seems like good marketing

  77. stpeter

    right

  78. ashleyroach

do we have photos? if not, it didn't happen, right?

  79. Kev

That and that we might consider a Note Well.

  80. stpeter

I have photos of the lounge

  81. Dave Cridland

I have some photos, I think there are others.

  82. stpeter

    but not of the devroom

  83. Dave Cridland

Kev, Yes, a Note Well would be useful.

  84. Florian

I have some photos as well

  85. stpeter

Kev: as in IETF Note Well?

  86. Dave Cridland

stpeter, I have some photos of the devroom. Including some of me and Kev talking, but those ones are awful.

  87. Kev

stpeter: Yes. See discussion on me objecting to being covertly recorded with the intention of publishing the recording.

  88. Kev

The rough summary being "Let's have a Note Well, and then I'll know in future that I'm subject to recording".

  89. stpeter

Kev: ah, that's in the part of the thread I hadn't read yet

  90. stpeter

Kev: but yes, you make a good point

  91. stpeter

in any case, we can post a blog entry without audio recordings :)

  92. ashleyroach

    right

  93. Florian

    yeah

  94. stpeter

I think we can draft something fairly quickly based on the notes that Dave and I made -- I can do that by end of week

  95. Dave Cridland

stpeter, If we're to have a *shudder* formal contribution policy, that's something I think we'll spend a considerable time on.

  96. stpeter

Dave Cridland: you will note that I started to work on one, see http://xmpp.org/extensions/inbox/copyright.html

  97. Kev

The question then is whether we can get by without one. I certainly don't think we can go recording private conversations without telling those involved.

  98. stpeter

Dave Cridland: but it would require more work, and probably legal advice

  99. stpeter

I'll draft a post and send it to folks for review before we post it

  100. Dave Cridland

Kev, I wondered about this. I think we probably can, being a US corporation, actually, except for the fact that the meeting was in the EU, and probably subject to EU laws.

  101. Dave Cridland

Kev, FWIW, I don't think Matt can legally keep a copy of the recording without needing to cover himself with Data Protection Act voodo.

  102. cchris434

in the US, it might depend the state you reside in for this type of issue

  103. stpeter

    heh

  104. Florian

heh, this is getting complicated :)

  105. stpeter

    indeed

  106. Dave Cridland

    Florian, Right, it is.

  107. stpeter

IETF meetings are always covered under Note Well, no matter where they're held

  108. Dave Cridland

stpeter, Yes, but the Note Well has had lawyers running over it, and doesn't involve the (implicit?) copyright assignment the XSF uses.

  109. Kev

stpeter: Right, which everyone must explicitly agree to, I believe.

  110. Dave Cridland

    kev, No, it's implicit.

  111. Dave Cridland

Kev, I think the lawyers would be happy with an explicit agreement of some kind.

  112. stpeter

Dave Cridland: sounds like a topic for another meeting

  113. Florian

    stpeter: +1

  114. Kev

Dave Cridland: Implicit that because it's an IETF venue you're under the Note Well, or implicit that once you're told the Note Well implies to that venue that any contribution is covered?

  115. Kev

I thought it was the latter (e.g. that the Note Well was mentioned at the start of sessions)

  116. Dave Cridland

Kev, Implicit because you're accepting only by the fact you continue participating.

  117. stpeter

the Note Well is mentioned at the beginning of every session, and you also agree to it when you register

  118. Dave Cridland

But in any case, I think we move the subject of Note Well etc to the list, if that's OK?

  119. stpeter

    yep

  120. Kev

    Sure.

  121. Dave Cridland

(As in, I don't think we'll solve this right now).

  122. Florian

    yes

  123. Dave Cridland

    SO as actions, I have:

  124. Dave Cridland

    1) We're going to beat the bushes and so on and so forth, looking for a Treasurer

  125. stpeter

I've already started writing the blog post :)

  126. Dave Cridland

    2) Peter is going to do a blog post. I'll send him some photos (On Friday, when I'm home).

  127. stpeter

    Dave Cridland: great, thanks

  128. Dave Cridland

    3) We'll start a thread on the members@ list about participation policy. (ie, recording, copyright, etc).

  129. Dave Cridland

    Anything else I missed?

  130. Florian

    sounds good

  131. Dave Cridland

    Oh, I suppose:

  132. Dave Cridland

    4) We should make a call for photos on the summit@ list.

  133. stpeter

I already asked for photos, but we can ask again

  134. Dave Cridland

    stpeter, Oh, yes, you did.

  135. Dave Cridland

So, I henceforth, thus, ergo, propose the motion that we adjourn.

  136. Florian

    +1

  137. bear

    +1

  138. cchris434

    +1

  139. bear flees for hard-deadline offline meeting

  140. bear

  141. Dave Cridland

    Right - Time Gentlemen, Please.

  142. Florian

    thanks all

  143. cchris434

    thanks!
