XSF Discussion - 2012-06-15

  1. stpeter looks around for Dave and Florian

  2. stpeter

    and Chris

  3. Kev

    I've poked Dave.

  4. stpeter

    Kev: thanks

  5. stpeter

    I don't see Florian online

  6. Dave Cridland

    *sigh*

  7. Dave Cridland

Sorry, folks, I'm in a world of craziness.

  8. stpeter

    yeah

  9. Ashley

    fwiw, i'll be mulititasking

  10. stpeter

well, at least you guys are quorate, if bear is paying attention :)

  11. bear

    :)

  12. stpeter

    heh

  13. stpeter waves to bear

  14. bear keeps it short:

  15. bear waves

  16. bear

i'll be there for krtconf and also before and after

  17. stpeter

    great

  18. bear

going to combine krtconf with some holiday time

  19. Kev

    It's cunningly timed so I can't be.

  20. stpeter

    cunning, eh?

  21. Dave Cridland

    Kev, It is?

  22. Kev

Dave Cridland: See the staff calendar.

  23. Dave Cridland

Kev, Assuming our illustrious CEO hasn't wiped it again. :-)

  24. Kev

KRT is 24th Oct or so, isn't it?

  25. stpeter

so the question is, do folks think this is the best time and place to hold a Summit in North America for 2012? I would be sorry not to have Kev there

  26. stpeter

    Kev: KRT is 24+24

  27. stpeter

    er

  28. stpeter

    23 + 24

  29. stpeter

    Summit would be 25

  30. stpeter

(if we decide that one day is enough)

  31. Dave Cridland

I think if we want a NA summit (and I think we do) then KRTConf is perfect for it.

  32. stpeter

Dave Cridland: yes, I think so too

  33. Ashley

    +1

  34. Kev

In theory it's possible for me to travel on the 24th to get there for the 25. If Isode want to send me.

  35. stpeter

I will need to figure out the logistics of a place to meet etc., although Adam said he would connect me to the folks at &yet who are working that side of things

  36. Kev

We had two days for the EU summit - do we imagine we'll have less to discuss in the US (or that the two days for Brussels were overkill)?

  37. stpeter

and worst comes to worst there's a Cisco office in Portland, although it's somewhat on the edge of town IIRC

  38. stpeter

Kev: I think that if we were better organized, we could have one full day

  39. stpeter

I don't think I organized the last Brussels meeting very well

  40. Kev

ISTR it going pretty well, but OK.

  41. stpeter

but I was rather busy at the time with IETF madness

  42. stpeter

another option is to have a Summit on Thursday and then a (smaller?) gathering on Friday

  43. Dave Cridland

I thought the summit went well, too.

  44. stpeter

I think we'll get some overflow from KRT into Thursday

  45. Dave Cridland

I'm happy to do two days, but I'd like to know costs, too.

  46. stpeter

BTW I will be helping Adam recruit speakers for KRT, and feel free to do some of that yourselves (or volunteer to give a talk): http://blog.krtconf.com/post/24012727201/krtconf-2012-call-for-speakers

  47. stpeter

in any case, if we think this is a good idea I can post to the website and start organizing the logistics a bit

  48. Dave Cridland

I think it's a fine idea. If we can get a second day, that seems fine too.

  49. Dave Cridland

I'd also suggest doing an XSF Dinner in Portland, too.

  50. Kev

Does Portland do ribs or steak? :)

  51. Dave Cridland

So, in my view, go ahead and post.

  52. bear

mozilla has an office (or soon will) in Portland

  53. Dave Cridland

Kev, There may be Kev-compatible food.

  54. bear

so we may have more resources than just cisco

  55. stpeter

    bear: good to know!

  56. stpeter

    bear: thanks

  57. stpeter

kev: I'm sure we can find that, yes

  58. bear

yes, portland has quite a few meat options to pick from :)

  59. stpeter

Dave Cridland: yes on dinner, probably Thursday evening

  60. Dave Cridland

Right - I must dash, really, got to be a Daddy-taxi, so:

  61. Kev

Then there's just the problem of finding people who speak English...

  62. stpeter

    heehee

  63. Dave Cridland

I say Peter should go ahead and organize things.

  64. Dave Cridland

Kev, It's OK, my Spanish is passable.

  65. Kev

ISTR having a really good burger last time I was in Portland.

  66. stpeter

as to two days, my concern was not cutting into people's weekends, especially for folks who have a long way to travel

  67. stpeter

but I'm open to 1 day, 1.5 days, or 2 days

  68. Dave Cridland

Right, I'm off, sorry - but number of days we can decide based on logistics and cost later.

  69. stpeter

    yes

  70. stpeter

    agreed

  71. bear nods

  72. stpeter

so I'll at least start our organizational activities and we can meet again in a few weeks to figure out more details

  73. bear

lets find out from &yet what the options are and meet again?

  74. Kev

    Thanks.

  75. stpeter

    bear: yes

  76. bear

    coolness - thanks

  77. stpeter

    anything else for today?

  78. bear

    not that I know of

  79. stpeter

    ok

  80. Ashley

    ok

  81. stpeter logs into WordPress and writes a blog post

  82. bear

    motion to end

  83. bear

    later then

  84. bear flees

  85. Ashley

    +1

  86. stpeter

    thanks, guys

  87. Ashley

    welcom

  88. ralphm

    bah, missed it

  89. stpeter

    bah!

  90. Ashley

    we're fast!

  91. stpeter

ralphm: basic idea is to hold the next Summit on the day or two after krtconf http://blog.krtconf.com/post/24012727201/krtconf-2012-call-for-speakers

  92. ralphm

    ok

  93. ralphm

so for next FOSDEM we had decided to do the two days ahead of FOSDEM

  94. ralphm

not sure if we would need to do the same here

  95. stpeter

ralphm: &yet is holding a redis conference on the day before krtconf, so the day or two after krtconf makes more sense this time

  96. ralphm

    right

  97. ralphm

    ok

  98. ralphm

    I think it's a great idea anyway

  99. stpeter

    cool

  100. stpeter

BTW, Adam said that krtconf will be capped at ~200 people

  101. stpeter

so if you want to be there, you'll want to pay attention and sign up early

  102. ralphm

I put in my e-mail address

  103. stpeter

    yay for email ;-)

  104. stpeter

    http://xmpp.org/2012/06/xmpp-summit/

  105. Kev

    Thanks Peter.

  106. stpeter

    sure thing

  107. stpeter

sorry about the American spellings ;-)

  108. Kev

    Forgiven.

  109. stpeter

Kev: if needed, we can set up live translation between English and American at the meeting ;-)

  110. Kev

    OK.

  111. Kev

Assuming someone wants to send me there :)

  112. stpeter

    assuming, yes

  113. Kev

12000 miles for one day of conference seems a little excessive.

  114. stpeter

    yeah

  115. stpeter

I'm not wedded to one day

  116. stpeter

I just want to make sure the time is productive

  117. stpeter

although the conversations at the last few Summits have been interesting, I don't feel that we've followed up as needed to make those ideas a reality

  118. Kev

I think there might be value in doing two days - one as a day of internal presentations, and one as a discussion day.

  119. stpeter

    Kev: quite possibly, yes

  120. stpeter

I should have more time to organize the event this time, if we want it to be more organized ;-)

  121. Kev

As there are people doing interesting non-OSS stuff with XMPP that I'd like to hear talks by, and isn't really FOSDEM compatible (I'm thinking of Echobit in particular).

  122. stpeter

we could also possibly have tracks or breakouts -- e.g., I know a fair number of people doing Internet of Things / machine-to-machine stuff with XMPP these days

  123. Kev

Perhaps we could work on the theory that there will be talks, and there will be discussions, and ask what topics and what talks people would like.

  124. Kev

Then we can decide to have an IoT track as appropriate.

  125. stpeter

    indeed

  126. stpeter

and I always believe that cross-pollination is a good idea

  127. Kev

I'd like the IoT guys to give an IoT 101, personally.

  128. stpeter

    true
