XSF Discussion - 2014-02-27

  1. Maranda somehow finds having a good XMPP client on iOS to be "utopistic".

  2. intosi

    Maranda: why?

  3. Tobias

what's mainly missing is a PUSH standardization, and that's being worked on by Lance et al. IIRC

  4. intosi

    True.

  5. Ge0rG

Tobias: what is also missing is a privacy-convenience slider rule

  6. Tobias

with an image in the middle that fades between EFF and NSA, the more left the slide the more EFF shines through, the more right the slider and the NSA logo dominates?

  7. intosi

But even without push, all clients I tested so far have show-stopping issues, such as not being able to connect to a site not offering SSLv3 (only TLSv1+), or crashing at random, or weird set-up, or only functioning as a foreground app.

  8. Tobias

intosi, where have you seen that SSLv3 thing? on iOS?

  9. intosi

Tobias: iOS 7 on my iPad, with Monal IM.

  10. intosi

Other clients can connect to that same server, only Monal refuses. It does want to connect to the same setup with SSLv3 enabled.

  11. Tobias

hmm..wonder if they are using apple's high security TLS implementation, instead of something interoperability proven like openssl :)

  12. Tobias

http://monal.im/ wonder how it does both, connect directly and stay open in the background

  13. intosi

Haven't tried that bit, so no idea if it does.

  14. Tobias

IIRC Kev mentioned one has to trick around to have even a short background time (i.e. 15 min) on iOS

  15. Ge0rG

    there is only one way to comment on this: goto fail;

  16. Ge0rG

iOS allows long-running background tasks for voip and some others

  17. Maranda

Tobias, Monal just doesn't, after the BG task execution hits the timeout it'll disconnect

  18. Maranda

at least that's how it behaved when I tried it.

  19. Tobias

    Maranda, ahh..ok

  20. Ge0rG

iOS XMPP clients belong into one of two groups: usability-broken or security-broken

  21. Tobias

    can't they have both broken?

  22. intosi

    Tobias: I'm sure they can.

  23. simon

Ge0rG has a refreshing way of saying how things are. Nice to have you more involved with the XSF Ge0rG.

  24. Ge0rG

simon: nobody is served by keeping the truth hidden...

  25. Maranda

    1

  26. Maranda

    +1

  27. Maranda would add also "or plainly-broken"

  28. Maranda

I have got reports from users of clients on the AppStore which don't work at all.

  29. Maranda

I have got reports from users of clients on the AppStore that don't work at all.

  30. Ge0rG

I've got reports from users who fail to connect to yax.im because SSLv3

  31. Kev

Looking at http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0059.html there seems to be a crazy number of SHOULDs in there that have no business not being MUSTs.

  32. stpeter

  33. ralphm
