XSF Discussion - 2018-01-02

  1. Ge0rG

daniel: what was the background of the "joining MUCs with bare JID" discussion at 34c3?

  2. mathieui

    Ge0rG, what discussion?

  3. Steve Kille

    Travis seems slow this year

  4. mathieui

it was about receiving presence updates from the bare JID of a MUC in order to have a room avatar

  5. mathieui

and whether that would break clients or not

  6. jonasw

    Steve Kille, oh yes

  7. SouL

Really nice to put logos and such

  8. jonasw

a lot of my things on it time out

  9. jonasw

it’s been slow-ish since somewhere between christmas and new years

  10. Ge0rG

mathieui: ah, okay. It wasn't quite clear to me from the summary

  11. Ge0rG

marc: what's the status of your proto XEP?

  12. marc

Ge0rG, didn't work on it because of christmas days, 34c3 and new year's eve

  13. marc

Ge0rG, but I'll work on it this week

  14. Ge0rG

    marc: that's great!

  15. Ge0rG

I'm pondering whether I should write an Informational XEP "Best Practices for operating a Public Server"

  16. jonasw

    seems like a useful document

  17. marc

    yes

  18. marc

What will be the content? "Don't do this!!1!"? :D

  19. Ge0rG

Any suggestions for what to write into it beyond what's in the last section of https://yaxim.org/blog/2017/12/22/spam-reduction-on-yax-dot-im/

  20. Ge0rG

    marc: yes

  21. SouL

If Ge0rG is writing that, yes, it would be "Don't do it" haha

  22. marc

Ge0rG, do you think it's a problem even if the capatch for IBR is strong enough to prevent account abuses?

  23. Ge0rG

I have a hard time not quoting spiderman.

  24. jonasw

    Ge0rG, I’d suggest a few XEPs which are nice-to-have

  25. jonasw

    feature-wise

  26. Ge0rG

    jonasw: beyond 0387?

  27. marc

    s/capatch/captcha

  28. jonasw

possibly not. buf referring to the "most recent compliance suite" is probably good

  29. Ge0rG

    jonasw: right.

  30. Ge0rG

marc: I don't know if there is a captcha strong enough to prevent account abuse.

  31. marc

Ge0rG, but automatic account abuse (and spam) is the main reason for not running a public server, right?

  32. jonasw

Ge0rG, after further thought, your document should indeed focus on the operational side of things. Having another XEP which advocates implementation of XEPs (which are irrelevant to the operational side but merely provide features, so unlike XEP-0157) would be bad.

  33. Ge0rG

jonasw: I'm glad you said that

  34. jonasw

but "Keep up-to-date with recent compliance suites and evaluate their implementation" should be one point for operations.

  38. MattJ

    I'll remind waqas :)

  39. Alex

    MattJ: good idea

  40. pep.

Ge0rG, sorry I'm only getting started in the minute taking slavery business :P I might get better at it eventually

  41. pep.

Depends how long you'll be able to bear with me

  42. Ge0rG

pep.: we could use a council minute taker ;)

  43. Ge0rG

Admittedly, there are some great volunteers already.

  44. pep.

tbh I don't like taking notes. I always lose track of what's going on when I start writing stuff down, plus I can't take part anymore :x

  45. pep.

But it's a good exercise, maybe I should do it more often

  46. pep.

Though taking minutes from a chatroom discussion is probably easier, as I don't have to remember what's been said

  47. Steve Kille

    jonasw: THANKS! that was quick

  48. jonasw

    Steve Kille, np

  49. Ge0rG

jonasw: do you have a colored diff URL as well?

  50. jonasw

Ge0rG, AFAIK the service doesn’t exist anymore

  51. Ge0rG

    jonasw: so sad.

  52. jonasw

    yeah

  53. jonasw

feel free to set one up :)

  54. Ge0rG

jonasw: I'd append that to my TODO list, but it's full already.

  55. Steve Kille

Ge0rG: the PR is a well structured sequence of commits, so you can quite easily see the changes from them
