XSF Discussion - 2018-02-02

  1. intosi

The jabber.org / xmpp.org DNS issues should now be resolved.

  2. jonasw

    \o/

  3. intosi

All DNS servers registered for the domain are up to date and responding quickly.

  4. jonasw

I should’ve come to summit and brought intosi & rest of iteam some cookies

  5. Zash

    Sponsor some cookies :)

  6. intosi

I would prefer a healthier option, like beer, but regardless, you should've come to the summit anyway ;)

  7. intosi

Eh, I meant 'fruit', easy mistake to make.

  8. jonasw

intosi, even if they’re homemade cookies? :)

  9. jonasw

I’m not a big fan of alcohol in general, so that’s generally nothing I give to people.

  10. intosi

I might enjoy one, sure ;)

  11. Dave Cridland

How did you get into the XSF? ;-)

  12. jonasw

Dave Cridland, me? somebody (Arc) sent me an email and suggested to apply ;-)

  13. Zash

    The Beer and Ribs foundation?

  14. Dave Cridland

Zash: Exactly. We're all about the beer and ribs.

  15. jonasw

but next year I might show up at summit, when things’ve settled a little ’round here :)

  16. ralphm

    edhelas: around?

  17. ralphm

jonasw: can you make some noise?

  18. edhelas

sorry, was gone, ralphm you're host again :)

  19. Ge0rG

intosi, jonasw: what's the current breakage status of xmpp.net? is it working? ipv6 too?

  20. Ge0rG

context is https://xmpp.net/result.php?domain=jabber.n39.eu&type=client responding "Error: Connection failed."

  21. jonasw

    Ge0rG, ipv6 isn’t

  22. jonasw

    otherwise it should be working

  23. jonasw

ipv6 isn’t an excuse for that domain though

  24. Ge0rG

oh, that server doesn't even have ipv6

  25. jonasw

somebody will have to take a look at the logs

  26. Ge0rG

    jonasw: s/somebody/...?/

  27. jonasw

    I don’t have permissions to

  28. jonasw

I guess that’ll have to wait until after summit

  29. jonasw

but maybe someone from iteam wants to take a look nevertheless

  30. intosi

I shall put it on my todo.

  31. Ge0rG

intosi: thanks very much. Ping me if you find out anything interesting.

  32. intosi

    Will do.

  33. jjrh

Well the fosdem XSF/XMPP related stuff have a remote participation option?

  34. jjrh

    *will

  35. MattJ

Did you have something specific in mind?

  36. jjrh

Nothing really - but with the IETF for example they have a XMPP chat, and live video and or audio stream.

  37. MattJ

There *may* be live streams of the devrooms, I'm not sure. They're definitely aiming to record everything this year though

  38. Zash

The XSF summit had remote participation, but it's over now.

  39. MattJ

The realtime room is on Sunday iirc, and I'm not sure how many talks are about XMPP

  40. jjrh

oh damn Zash - I guess I haven't been paying close enough attention to things.

  41. MattJ

Oh, sorry... I thought you were asking in the context of "what now", and already knew the summit was over

  42. Zash

The Summit is more like the IETF meetings than FOSDEM

  43. Zash

    I suppose

  44. MattJ

jjrh, the summit was the past couple of days. Notes here: https://xmppsummit2018.opkode.com/

  45. jjrh

Yeah that was what I was more interested in but if it was this past week then I probably wouldn't have been able to attend anyways. Been pretty crazy with non xmpp related work.

  46. jjrh

    Thanks for that MattJ

  47. vanitasvitae

I just wanted to send a mail to standards@, but my mail was returned due to some DNS issue, so for now I'll just report it here; The SIMS XEP is at no point referencing or depending on References, even though all examples contain Reference elements. I assume this has just been forgotten?

  48. peter

vanitasvitae: yes, I just received a DNS error too... "Host or domain name not found. Name service error for name=atlas.xmpp.org type=A: Host not found"

  49. peter

Should be atlas.jabber.org for now, unless we're (finally) moving everything XSF to use *.xmpp.org

  50. Kev

Edwin switched everything to be .xmpp.org the other day.

  51. Tobias

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-omara-mls-architecture/ https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-barnes-mls-protocol/ "The Messaging Layer Security (MLS) Protocol" sounds interesting

  52. Zash

    > MLS is not intended as a full instant messaging protocol but rather is intended to be embedded in a concrete protocol such as XMPP

  53. Zash

So, comparable with OTR, OMEMO etc?

  54. Tobias

seems it's specifically for groupchat, not? although 1-to-1 could be a special case of that

  55. Zash

    Don't forget multiple devices
