XSF Discussion - 2020-10-15

  1. Zash

Today in Things I Haven't Noticed In XEP-0045 Before: > How nickname conflicts are determined is up to the implementation (e.g., whether the service applies a case folding routine, a stringprep profile such as Resourceprep or Nodeprep, etc.).

  2. eta

I feel like the way XEP-0045 is structured makes it hard to understand

  3. Zash

    My XEP is too big!

  4. emus

I would be happy to introduce a monthly Newsletter section like: Did you now? XEP-999 allows you to / states that / recommends to ...

  5. emus

Anything which is commonly unknown or very often misunderstood

  6. Zash

This month XEP-0060 grew twelve new sections. Learn how you can stay safe from this monster!

  7. emus

😁 Seriously, I can imagine there are many of those myths and corner cases

  8. edhelas

13 things you didn't knew that are in 0060, the 5th one will surprise you !

  9. emus

No need to become click bait for sure

  10. pep.

I won't be available for the meeting today. Sorry for the late notice

    0. Welcome

  13. ralphm

Hi! Who do we have? I see pep. has sent his regrets.

  14. Seve sends πŸ‘‹ emoji

  15. ralphm

Thanks you for your gracious gift :-D

  16. ralphm

Thank you for your gracious gift :-D

  17. Seve

Guus, MattJ: another for you πŸ‘‹

  22. ralphm

I see MattJ raised an item for discussion. Additionally, I was browsing through the "Awaiting feedback" and "Backburner" items, and some of those are over a year old. Either we pick up on them, or call it a loss.

  23. ralphm

    Anything else?

  24. Guus

    none here

  25. ralphm

    1. Minute taker

  26. Guus

right, here we go again. I've actually got better things to do than play this game. I'm off to work again.

  27. ralphm

From what I can tell, pep. made minutes the last two meetings, and I before that. I believe we agreed to rotate, but if you prefer I appoint someone each meeting, I'd be happy to.

  28. MattJ

Whatever, I'll (try to) do it

  29. ralphm

    Thanks MattJ

  30. ralphm

    2. XEP-0001 clarifications

  31. ralphm

What is the thing we need to do here?

  32. MattJ

AIUI it was generally agreed that XEP-0001 doesn't reflect the way we actually do some things these days

  33. MattJ

and there is no progress on updating it

  34. ralphm

Right, the 'few days' of stepping back that Kev suggested has been a slight bit longer.

  35. ralphm

What I can do is revisit the points being made around then, ask Kev if he's still interested in writing up a PR, and if not, suggest a change myself.

  36. MattJ

    Sounds good

  37. Seve

Sounds good to me, yes πŸ™‚

  38. Seve

    (Thank you)

  39. ralphm

    All right.

  40. ralphm

    3. Old agenda items

  41. ralphm

As mentioned at 0), we have a bunch of old cruft in there.

  42. ralphm

E.g. the server setup with MattJ and Messenger Regulation with Ge0rG.

  43. ralphm

Also Adopt a Character, typos with jonas’, and the item on hiring a comms person.

  44. Ge0rG

the Messenger Regulations folks promised to contact me, and didn't. Whereas I promised to stay in contact and... didn't

  45. ralphm

Ge0rG, right. I was pointed to a recent article in Heise, with Mrs. Reda's point of view, but I'm unsure how to procede from where we are.

  46. Ge0rG

    ralphm: the European sovereignity one?

  47. ralphm

    https://twitter.com/Senficon/status/1315539804705239047

  48. Ge0rG

ralphm: I've read that but didn't really draw the conclusions regarding XMPP

  49. ralphm

Well, maybe something as fundamental as the XMPP protocol isn't even on her radar, but she seems to think that she can fund her way out it.

  50. ralphm

Ge0rG, anyway, is there anything we can do at this point? Do you intend to follow-up?

  51. Ge0rG

ralphm: I'd like to, but I just lacked the time. I should write a follow-up mail to that German gov't office person

  52. Seve

Regarding the Adopt a Character, I was in favour of it but not sure what happened after flow picked it up. I can't take more tasks right now, so unfortunately if there is no one that could work on this, we might need to call it a loss

  53. ralphm

Ge0rG, I know the feeling. If you still want to do it, I'll update the card to that end.

  54. Ge0rG

    ralphm: please do

  55. ralphm

    Thanks!

  56. ralphm

Seve, right. I'll keep this one for a bit, and see if flow can send us an update

  57. ralphm

MattJ, where are we with our server setup? Is there anything that Board can do?

  58. MattJ

I haven't had time to dedicate to it, as most of my volunteering time (and more) has been on other related things, such as the recent IETF effort

  59. Ge0rG

ralphm: there is now an Official Test Instance for the IETF, https://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/msg/ietf-announce/B1b71fKWGfAq0ZKJ0KSwxzn7WgI/

  60. Ge0rG

Many thanks to MattJ for setting up things and providing configs

  61. MattJ

But I don't think we're in a bad place, and are making slow progress - jonas’ has some automation that he'll deploy soon, which should fix the issues with the website and other things not updating automatically

  62. ralphm

    Ah, that's great to know.

  63. MattJ

XSF infra competes for the same block of time as things like the jabber.org migration, which is still ongoing

  64. ralphm

on both IETF and our own infra

  65. ralphm

understood, I'll keep it for now then

  66. ralphm

I'll try and revisit these items more often.

  67. ralphm

    4. AOB

  69. Seve

    All good here

  70. MattJ

    TIL this registry https://xmpp.org/registrar/nodes.html

  78. Zash

    "pubsub/nodes" isn't in XEP-0060?

  79. Zash

Could this have been part of the broken out node tree stuff?

  80. larma

Wasn't registrar the joke that is not maintained since >10 years?
