Clients determine that a particular inbound message is a MUC PM by looking at it's type, right? Regular MUC messages have type='groupchat', while PMs have not?

PMs look like regular chat messages, which makes everything complicated if you don't know they come from a MUC

unless the MUC stamps them with that <{muc}x/> tag

In XEP-0045, this is specified: > If the room is non-anonymous, the service MAY include an Extended Stanza Addressing (XEP-0033) [16] element that notes the original full JID of the sender by means of the "ofrom" address type: This is limited to messages retrieved from history, though. MUC MAM doesn't reference this at all, but I'm thinking it'd be equally desirable there? Is there harm in slapping it onto live messages (for non-anon rooms), even if clients get to know about real JIDs through presence information?

It's redundant since JIDs are available in presence/{muc#user}x/item/@jid in non-anon rooms ✏

In semi-anon rooms you'd rather use occupant-id

I can see the redundancy - but I'm wondering if it'd hurt (apart from the obvious added weight to the stanzas).

I wouldn't touch 0033 with a pole, it's based on RFC 822

Also we had a nice security issue in 0313 where the server wasn't required to remove impersonation attacks from stored stanza
