  1. MHHHMY

Can anybody tell me what is this all about cause i came here by mistake?

  2. MattJ

It's about developing XMPP, an open communication protocol. Welcome :)

  3. MHHHMY

i see, so can i ask a question that doesn't has anything to do with developing "XMPP" ?

  4. MHHHMY

How do i use "XMPP" to chat with someone?

  5. vanitasvitae

    you already do 🙂

  6. MHHHMY

yeah i took so long for anyone to reply so i asked any way

  7. MHHHMY

    *it

  8. Zash

Is a question about asking questions a question that doesn't have anything to do with XMPP development?

  9. jonas’

MHHHMY, the answer worked for both of your questinos.

  10. jonas’

    You’re already chatting using XMPP.

  11. Zash

Looks like they left a long time ago.

  12. jonas’

    thanks Dino

  13. jonas’

for still offering me the name for completion nontheless

  14. Holger

jonas’: It's 2021, MUC is no longer presence-based.

  15. Zash

    except when it is

  16. Holger

Was only half-joking, I'm sometimes annoyed by clients *not* completing offline members.

  17. Holger

Obviously clients should complete the nick if the user comes back, and not do it otherwise.

  18. mathieui

Holger, offline members, sure, offline participants, less

  19. Holger

    I'll agree with "less" 🙂

  20. Holger

    Do it sometimes.

  21. jonas’

Holger, I like what conversations does (showing a "The user has left the room" toast(?)), but every other client doesn’t complete absent people, which I like

  22. jonas’

because that’s an easy way to find if someone is still in the room

  23. jonas’

which is especially hard to do otherwise with occupant lists sorted by affiliation and whatnot

  24. Zash dreams of visual hints

  25. lovetox

couldnt you just show a status indicator

  26. lovetox

and if its grey or black the person is not currently joined

  27. jonas’

    where?

  28. Zash

N900 MUC view had status dots in the corner of the avatars IIRC

  29. Zash

Or next to them? Found a screenshot: https://www.nolapeles.com/2009/08/30/nokia-n900-y-maemo-5-respuesta-impelable/

  30. moparisthebest

jonas’, (apologies, can't remember which MUC this discussion started in yesterday) re: jitsi interop via iframe https://developer.8x8.com/jaas/docs

  31. lovetox

jonas in the muc roster list?

  32. jonas’

    lovetox, a non-member?

  33. lovetox

ok maybe i dont understand this sentence

  34. lovetox

    > I like what conversations does (showing a "The user has left the room" toast(?)), but every other client doesn’t complete absent people, which I like

  35. lovetox

you like that conversations shows that a user left, BUT every other client *doesnt* complete absent people?

  36. lovetox

so all clients show users that have left?

  37. lovetox

im not following that observation at all

  38. Zash

lovetox, it shows them that when you try to mention them (by clicking their avatar)

  39. Zash

Desktop client equivalent would probably be when you tab-complete their nick or somesuch

  40. lovetox

so this is only about tab completion

  41. lovetox

but why wouldnt i complete the name, the user comes back later

  42. Zash

    No

  43. Zash

The root problem is that you have no way of knowing if they're still there when you write something.

  44. lovetox

ah ok, so you want a hint when you tab complete

  45. lovetox

    and thats what C shows

  46. Zash

In some clients you can tell by the nickname being gone from tab complete, like poezio.

  47. lovetox

ok i understand, yes thats indeed very nice of C

  48. lovetox

in that light my remark about user status makes of course not much sense

  49. lovetox

    :)
