  1. goffi

Hi there, I've finally made the official announce if you want the details for the ActivityPub<=>XMPP gateway and Pubsub e2ee project: https://www.goffi.org/b/activitypub-gateway-and-pubsub-e2ee-QGqK

  2. mathieui

    great!

  3. emus

    MattJ: https://xmpp.org/uses/instant-messaging.html

  4. MattJ

emus, thanks... those are all examples of XMPP built into specific products though

  5. emus

    You meant using xmpp "plain"

  6. MattJ

Looking for general communication over interoperable XMPP rather than most of these examples which simply feature XMPP as a solution for chat within their particular product

  7. emus

    Ah okay

  8. Daniel

Most organizations I know of or heard rumors of are more on the secretive side.

  9. MattJ

    Indeed

  10. Zash

I only heard "Oh, XMPP? We used that 10 years ago. Pidgin was great!"

  11. MattJ

    I heard "20" today

  12. MattJ

and a sentence beginning with "The only problem with XMPP is..."

  13. yushyin

apropos pidgin, at my work we still use irc and the not so tech-savvy colleagues use pidgin as irc client :D it is the worst irc client I know about ...

  14. mdosch

I'd rather use it for IRC than for XMPP…

  15. yushyin

well ... yes you are indeed right

  16. wgreenhouse

does anybody know of any papers or real-world examples of XEP-0174 (serverless xmpp) being used over a vpn or mesh network?

  17. wgreenhouse

lack of authentication of users is a bit weird but it seems like an interesting potential application

  18. jonas’

hmmm mesh/vpn+serverless sounds problematic. IIRC serverless relies a lot on multi- or broadcast, which needs extra support from the network layer in such circumstances (and may not be desirable for performance reasons)

  19. Daniel

Fwiw the MOKA / federal police github is still active. I don't know any internals but I'd assume the experiment hasn't ended yet

  20. jonas’

but I don't know of any practical usr

  21. jonas’

but I don't know of any practical use

  22. wgreenhouse

    > hmmm mesh/vpn+serverless sounds problematic. IIRC serverless relies a lot on multi- or broadcast, which needs extra support from the network layer in such circumstances (and may not be desirable for performance reasons) jonas’: that makes sense, it requires mDNS (avahi/bonjour)

  24. emus

    Not bad

  25. jonas’

    unless you’re running yax.im

  26. mathieui

    :D

  27. jonas’

but, we definitely need that in the upcoming newsletter

  28. emus

Well, Georg is supporting this and knows about it

  29. emus

    jonas’: Yes 👨‍💻

  30. mdosch

    > Well, Georg is supporting this and knows about it Ge0rg is very active in the prosody MUC these days. 😬

  31. emus

    mdosch: What do you mean?

  32. mdosch

Load problems due to all this vaccination stuff.

  33. emus

But I thought he agreed to this? ok, anyway offtopic

  34. mdosch

Yeah, he agreed on the use. But the huge load is causing issues.

  35. emus

Ok, yeah I saw the blog post, too
