  3. şişio

    > worst that could happen is that something™ happens to the trademark and a bunch of stuff needs to change names Is a name change possible at this time? Since it hasn't changed in years, I think it's okay.

  4. Menel

Everything is possible, but you should not worry. There is really no issue

  5. şişio

    > Everything is possible, but you should not worry. There is really no issue 👍😀

  6. şişio

The discovery gives a warning what is it. Warning says ip is open.

  7. şişio

    What is this

  8. şişio

İs this issue? But ı am use tor. What if I don't use it?

  9. Zash

I have no idea what this is about.

  10. şişio

    https://upload.blabber.im/aeaf42304718864e/f69f5c83c2cfc4ec.jpg

  11. mdosch

I can't speak Turkish but that's probably only the warning that a third party search.jabber.network is used for the groupchat search.

  12. Zash

So the same way as if you go to https://search.jabber.network/ in a web browser, the server sees your IP. Just like with any web site.

  13. şişio

    > I can't speak Turkish but that's probably only the warning that a third party search.jabber.network is used for the groupchat search. Yes, true.

  14. şişio

    > So the same way as if you go to https://search.jabber.network/ in a web browser, the server sees your IP. Just like with any web site. İf ı don't use Tor, the ip is open

  15. şişio

    Am ı right?

  16. şişio

Even if I have my own server

  17. şişio

I'm just thinking about if there's a problem.

  18. Zash

    Not really

  19. şişio

    How?

  20. Zash

It's just a notice for your awareness.

  21. şişio

    I have to use Tor

  22. şişio

    Because ip will be on

  23. mathieui

şişio, if your system is configured to use tor properly, conversations will not actively bypass that configuration

  24. şişio

If I don't use tor, isn't ip on?

  25. mathieui

if you don’t use tor and search for a muc, yes, search.jabber.network will see your IP

  26. mathieui

but it is not supposed to be a problem

  27. mathieui

either don’t search for rooms or trust the operator of the website

  28. Sam

just like every webpage you visit and every app you use that communicates with a server. Unless you also use Tor for everything else, there is no point to just using it here

  29. Sam

This is why I sometimes think those sorts of warnings do more harm than good. Most people don't know enough to actually figure out if there is a threat and it will just scare them into doing things they don't understand that don't help. Mention the site being used and provide a link to their privacy policy, but that's about it IMO

  30. jonas’

I’m not going to sell your data, promise :)

  31. şişio

    I use Tor, on phone

  32. qrpnxz

i don't even get what this warning is of

  33. şişio

İp open if you search for a room

  34. jonas’

that I get to see the IP of people and what they search for when using s.j.n

  35. şişio

    > just like every webpage you visit and every app you use that communicates with a server. Unless you also use Tor for everything else, there is no point to just using it here I use Tor for everything

  36. Sam

There's probably no point to that too, but if ypu already use it for everything then this is no different from any other app and you can do whatever you normally do and ignore the warnings.

  37. şişio

    > There's probably no point to that too, but if ypu already use it for everything then this is no different from any other app and you can do whatever you normally do and ignore the warnings. But if I don't use ip on

  38. şişio

    Or not use room search

  39. mathieui

"use ip on" does not translate nicely to english, and I at least don’t really understand what you mean by it

  40. şişio

    They see İP

  41. şişio

    My english is bad

  42. şişio

    Sorry

  43. mathieui

no problem, I’m just asking to clarify

  44. mathieui

yes, if you do not use Tor, jonas’ will see your IP when you use their service

  45. mathieui

    just like any other website/API

  46. mathieui

since it is a service external to the jabber server (but you could provide your own as well), your client shows a privacy warning to let you choose if you want to use it or not

  47. şişio

Solution: do not use or use with TOR

  48. Sam

I'm really not sure what you're asking

  49. şişio

We can also use it from the site

  50. Sam

If you already use Tor for everything, why wouldn't you use it for this too?

  51. jonas’

believeme, I have better things to do than looking at search queries of s.j.n

  52. Sam

If you don't already use Tor for everything, shy would this be special?

  53. şişio

    > believeme, I have better things to do than looking at search queries of s.j.n 😀😀

  54. Sam

Just do what you normally do.

  55. şişio

    Ok

  56. şişio

    > We can also use it from the site This is 3. solution

  57. jonas’

what do you mean by "from the site"?

  58. Sam

using the site is exactly the same as using it from the app

  59. jonas’

well not exactly. the app uses POST, the site uses GET.

  60. Sam

exactly the same in the context of this discussion :(

  61. Sam

    :), evem

  62. jonas’

it is in fact not, because GET data is logged while POST data is not

  63. Sam

    even. I hate phones.

  64. Sam

From the users perspective they can't guarantee that

  65. jonas’

    that’s certainly true

  66. şişio

    > using the site is exactly the same as using it from the app No. I use TOR when using from the site

  67. jonas’

şişio, don’t you also use tor with conversations or whatnot?

  68. şişio

    > şişio, don’t you also use tor with conversations or whatnot? I use Tor

  69. Sam

Then use Tor from the app too and it's the same. I guess I still don't get what your concern is.

  70. şişio

    Tor is harder to use

  71. şişio

And if I open a server, I have to use it.

  72. homebeach

Has there been any project making XMPP to work with Freenet?

  73. şişio

    > Tor is harder to use > And if I open a server, I have to use it. Compelled

  74. şişio

    But no problem

  75. şişio

Solution: 1. Use TOR, 2.Use TOR with site, 3. Not use explore

  76. şişio

    Right?

  77. şişio

So, Jason, does he see my name or something?

  78. Zash

    No

  79. şişio

    Thanks for your help

  80. moparisthebest

  84. moparisthebest

No idea, looks like they support email so in theory could support XMPP too, but also looks like a plugin and all the screenshots are from Windows XP http://freesocial.draketo.de/freemail_en.html

  85. Sam

Someone advocating freenet, but also using Google Fi and sending one of their redirects… 🤔

  86. Sam

A day or two ago there was a brief discussion about XEPs that needed to be deprecated, rewritten, or otherwise needed work. What would people say to an Office Hours that was a working session where everybody brings their list of XEPs they think need to go away or be rewritten and we go through them and try to come to consensus on recommendations / maybe volunteer to walk them through whatever process we all decide they need?

  87. Sam

Sort of an informal "Modernization Working Group" / round table.

  88. Sam

The end goal would be a document where we write up what we think needs to happen to each one that we can hand to council for them to do with what they will. It would include the reasoning and any dissents (and their reasoning)

  89. Zash

Definitely worth a try at least 🙂

  90. Sam

No idea if/how this will work, but I put it on the schedule. Should be a fun session to gripe about things if nothing else

  91. Sam

dwd: reminder that you should still do a session on the thing you promised :)

  92. Zash

Loosely related idea: Take the entire list of XEPs and have a bot post a poll a day to mastodon or something.

  93. Zash

    Fun for over a year!

  94. Sam

    Oooh, that's a fun one

  95. Sam

In case anyone wants to suggest XEPs (please set a name before you edit if possible): https://pad.disroot.org/p/XSF_Modernization_Working_Group_Recommendations

  96. Zash

Hm, there's quite a number of Deferred that haven't been touched in over a decade...

  97. Sam

Those seem like good ones to auto-add to the list.

  98. Sam

I'll send this out as an email to try and drum up interest / expand this list in advance too

  99. qrpnxz

i think i saw a couple of deferred that were actually used but i don't recall

  100. Sam

Email sent. I'm tentatively excited about this idea given how the "Towards XMPP 2.0" discussion went well.

  101. şişio

Is the discovery in the app the same as the non-application?

  102. şişio

    > Is the discovery in the app the same as the non-application? I think same

  103. Sam

    Yes, it's the same

  104. şişio

    👍
