  1. scorch

    > at the same time they'd read "multi-device" and be like "wow that would be cool, wish my messengers had that feature" lol Dont all messengers have that feature? Before coming to xmpp i never had that issue

  2. moparisthebest

scorch, do any? whatsapp and signal etc

  3. scorch

Idk about those 2, fb messenger instagram dms and discord do

  4. moparisthebest

facebook messenger is a webapp no ?

  5. moparisthebest

also discord ? and instagram dms I suppose

  6. moparisthebest

    I wouldn't count a forum software as a multi-device messenger either

  7. jonas’

even being a webapp, if it supports multi-device it counts ;)

  8. scorch

Theres also an app for messenger

  9. moparisthebest

"useable from a browser" is multi-device now? eh

  10. scorch

They are mostly used as applications

  11. jonas’

moparisthebest, says the one who wants to run everything over port 443 :P

  12. moparisthebest

what does that have to do with browsers ? :P

  13. scorch

They are the mostpopular messengers where Im at

  14. moparisthebest

if there's an open port, use it

  15. jonas’

moparisthebest, it's the same thing -- web taking over for being the web.

  16. moparisthebest

scorch, that's fair, I appreciate the input

  17. scorch

    > "useable from a browser" is multi-device now? eh Lmao with this logic xmpp wouldnt count either, because theres movim and converse

  18. scorch

    > scorch, that's fair, I appreciate the input 👍

  19. moparisthebest

I just never thought about opening the same web page on multiple devices as being multi-device, cause really it's just accessing the server, which is 1 device

  20. moparisthebest

but the more I thought about it, I'm not sure that distinction matters

  21. moparisthebest

especially compared to actual single-device apps like whatsapp and signal etc, I hear these have desktop apps nowadays too but they go through your phone or something? crazy

  22. scorch

well phone users don't open the webpage they use the application, which is probably built on electron sure but it still counts

  23. scorch

    > especially compared to actual single-device apps like whatsapp and signal etc, I hear these have desktop apps nowadays too but they go flow

  24. scorch

    they actually do that? bruh

  25. mjk

Dunno how popular telegram is, globally, but I think its desktop client is pretty independent from its mobile one

  26. rion

The connection there IIRC is the necessity to confirm from another device when you add desktop device via SMS or in-app code. And this another device is usually a mobile phone.

  27. rion

Telegram's UI is probably the best for a regular user IMO

  28. mjk

    > Telegram's UI is probably the best for a regular user IMO Until you want to share a file over the garden wall. This is where it abruptly stops being convenient and starts to hinder your every move

  29. Sam

We had our first application for fiscal hosting :) I followed up and let them know their request would be considered and forwarded it to the board/treasurer.

  30. Daniel

when i'm donating can I choose which project my donation should go to?

  31. Daniel

that's probably the only way this would make sense but that has never been clear

  32. Sam

Yes, you'd go directly to the project page and donate there. The fact that they store their money at the XSF is entirely transparent to you

  33. Sam

I added an office hours for 05 October to show off the project and Open Collective and answer these sorts of questions as well; it should help us build an FAQ or something

  34. Sam

(well, not entirely transparent, it lists that they use the XSF, but it's clear that you're donating to them, not the XSF, I should say)

  35. Sam

It also lets you donate directly to the XSF though, which is a nice side effect since individuals couldn't do that before

  36. Daniel

I see. I didn’t follow the whole thing too closely but there has been some vibe of "xsf receives large sum of money and redistrubutes that somehow"

  37. Daniel

but maybe that has been entirely in my head

  38. Sam

*nods* that's not good if I made it come off that way, sorry about that. It's more that small projects often don't want to go through the hassle of setting up a bank account or legal entity to hold money, if they're in line with the XSF's non-profit mission the XSF can now hold those funds for them. But they are still the projects funds donated by the projects donors.
