  2. jonas’

so in MIX, is there a way for a *client* to opt out of receiving MIX messages (as opposed for an account to opt out of that)?

  3. jonas’

or rather, have receiving messages from a MIX being opt-in even

  4. jonas’

thinking of my phone where I currently do not join all of my MUCs for sanity and power conservation purposes

  5. jonas’

the former (sanity) could be achieved with local filtering, but it certainly won't be good for the battery to receive the most recent flamewar in $irc or $muc or $mix in real time.

  6. Menel

Something like https://modules.prosody.im/mod_csi_muc_priorities.html for mix, would that be possible? Best would be, if there could be a behavior (low priority) of open channels by default..

  7. jonas’

Menel, well, that'd still send pointless bytes across the wire eventually, and potentially many of them

  8. jonas’

which would then be discarded by the receiving device

  9. jonas’

this line of thought is pushing me toward thinking that a more hybrid approach where MUC join persistence is handled server side (similar to how biboumi implements persistence for IRC), but clients stay with the old-fashioned MUC protocol.

  10. Menel

Jeah. That's true. But still more battery friendly

  11. jonas’

    slightly

  12. Ge0rG

    jonas’: mod_muc_proxy?

  13. jonas’

    possibly

  14. Ge0rG

I've heard that joining a room from a bare JID is not explicitly forbidden! 😜

  15. moparisthebest

    If it works, it's allowed

  16. Ge0rG

Well, somebody needs to check all the widely used MUC implementations, open issue reports and wait five years.

  17. marc

What client would you recommend on Windows? For non-tech users

  18. mjk

marc: Dino generally aims to be maximally simple, unlike Gajim, but is a tiny bit rough around the edges right now. Still I'd recommend it over Gajim in this case. Builds for windows aren't official yet though

  19. mjk

    See LAGonauta at github

  20. marc

mjk: thanks, yes without an easy way to be installed Dino is out 😪

  21. mjk

marc: if _is_ easy, ofc if you don't consider downloading and running an unsigned installer exe to be hard. xD

  22. marc

mjk, I did not even find an installier on the web page

  23. mjk

Yes, as I said, it's not officially maintained for now

  24. mjk

There is interest in publishing in windows app store eventually tho

  25. mjk

For now, https://github.com/LAGonauta/dino/releases is the easiest

  26. yushyin

uwpx is another windows client, available in the ms windows app store (it is free)

  27. mjk

Ah, right. Although, last I heard, it's deep in beta testing

  28. mjk

And probably doesn't do e2ee yet

  29. marc

    Yeah, that's not an option

  30. mjk

Don't get me wrong, Gajim is pretty solid, but UI, as of 1.3 is still pretty busy. Look forward to 1.4!

  32. yushyin

mjk, omemo support seems to be 'experimental'.

  33. yushyin

oh no support foer omemo in MUCs, yeah that's not an optionen after all
