https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30746374 > I was reverse engineering my microwave a few years ago and couldn't MITM on XMPP because of the TLS

  2. jonas’

    *blink*

  3. emus

MattJ: can you explain for me a bit more 😅

  4. emus

    they blame xmpp again?

  5. mjk

The microwave was verifying certs? o.o

  6. jonas’

well, microwaves do have things which transmit on the 2.4 GHz band anyway. making them networked was the obvious next step! /s

  7. Ge0rG

Nothing wrong with modulating your wifi signal on the magnetron. Two-for-one long-range wifi and bird-killer!

  8. jonas’

    not just birds I suppose

  9. Ge0rG

    fry your pi(e)?

  10. rubi

w-why does the microwave use xmpp

  11. Zash

more importantly, what did the microwave say to the vacuum cleaner?

  12. MattJ

So it can communicate with the vacuum cleaner

  13. MattJ

    ^5 Zash

  14. edhelas

because I prefer to use XML to heat my pasta than JSON

  15. mathieui

If you buy """smart""" appliances they have a need to communicate, and from there you can only pick your poison

  16. rubi

mmm xml flavor is my favorite

  17. Ge0rG

my vacuum cleaner has a nodejs web server deployed locally that does HTTP-REST-JSON :(

  18. edhelas

can't wait for the Matrix Fridge, I heard that it's the coolest protocol in town 😏

  19. rubi

    modern and superior refrigerator

  20. rubi

i hope it doesn't stop working from low disk space

  21. edhelas

at least the fridge can cool down the CPU :p

  22. emus

you should as the UWPX dev who connected his coffee machine to xmpp to get him a coffee on request

  23. mjk

Bifrost: coming soon to the refrigerator near you

  24. Ge0rG

now I wonder if there is a brand of refrigerator with "bi-frost"

  25. stpeter

Someone contacted me about potentially creating an email discussion list on xmpp.org for German-speaking developers and users (kind of like "jdev-de"). Do we think there might be enough interest in this to host it?

  26. stpeter

More concretely, if we did host it, would anyone here volunteer to help administer it?

  27. moparisthebest

I love XMPP but I don't want any of my appliances speaking it... Or anything at all

  28. Ellenor Malik

If your appliances must network, how?

  29. moparisthebest

    they MUST NOT network

  30. mjk

    (unless they SHOULD :D)

  31. moparisthebest

    no, never :P

  32. mjk

  33. emus

FYI Tinyletter: Replace with simple maillist https://github.com/xsf/xmpp.org/issues/1110

  34. emus

I mean if there are not responses or vetos I will go ahead soon
