Matthew: thanks! That seems to be the best that can be done, though I notice you also don't specify a minimum (or maximum) time?

moparisthebest: you didn't give him grief or make fun of him about wanting something so silly. > It's useful for users to be able to send sensitive messages within a conversation which should be removed after the target user(s) has read them. This can be achieved today by the sender redacting the message after the receipient(s) have read them, but this is a tedious manual process. This proposal provides a way of automating this process.

What happened to the children that can't make good choices, etc.? I can't remember that person's username.

crypt
I kid, but there's definitely a double-standard here.

Unsure what you are talking about

y can use a default of average reading speed ... that's abt 200-250 words per minute
-
TheCoffeMaker
maybe 160wpm would be "users" average

I read the whole "ephemeral messages" discussion (and looked at the spec) and I share some of the concerns raised. As mentioned already, I think if the spec was renamed, to something like "Client message retention policy requests", then some of the concerns would be addressed. I think the term "ephemeral" messages probably comes with all kinds of hidden assumptions and expectations based on the use of the term elsewhere.

jcbrand
At least it's better than "exploding messages" , which I guess is meant tongue in cheek, but is a terrible name
-
jcbrand
> you didn't give him grief or make fun of him about wanting something so silly. Providing thoughtful criticism isn't giving "grief" and no-one used the word "silly". It's important that people are able to provide feedback and mention concerns without being put down for it.

I don't know... there was a lot of down-talking in the morning.

It's all good. It wasn't directed at me, but to others who were trying to make the case for why people might want that feature. ✏

I didn't mean anything as "down-talking" and I hope it didn't come across that way

I didn't take it personal, but one has to really have their seatbelt fastened if they want to go through the process of getting their spec out there.. It's not easy everyday.
-
mjk
Heh, "exploding" probably refers to what happens to one's social image/carreer when such a message is wrongly assumed to have been safely deleted :p

I've been advocating XMPP as a better alternative to popular messengers on Matrix. People are always just stunned or clueless. For most there, Matrix is superior in so many ways XMPP wish it could have been 🙄
