Kev: He will follow-up with a comment btw, would you like to be org admin backup? in case I have issues or have difficulties
-
Guus
Hmm... there's no deleting a user from our wiki? I've created a test account, to see if email generation was still working. I can block the account, but I don't see how I can completely remove it.
-
pep.
I might be hallucinating but wasn't there a cli tool also for mediawiki?
-
pep.
(on the server that is)
-
Guus
Oh that might very well be the case. I'm only using the web interface.
-
MattJ
I think deleting users is impossible/hard in MediaWiki by design
-
Guus
Not a big deal, but I've added some cruft now.
-
MattJ
You can change/remove stuff like the email address and credentials, and block
-
MattJ
Nobody will notice :)
-
Guus
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
Alex
only can only be deleted directly in the database, there are no admin poages for it. MediaWiki keeps users forever because content maybe assigned to them. I was struggling with this a lot before
-
Alex
Guus: is is related to the account request for Nicola? He sent me direct messages, just came back to my office
-
Alex
someone here who has access to the MediaWiki box? looks like passwords can be resetted over php commands direrctly: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Resetting_passwords
-
Alex
´# set the password for username 'example' to 'newpassword' php changePassword.php --user=example --password=newpassword´
-
Zash
I have access. Is there a need?
-
Zash
Isn't there a forgot password thing?
-
Alex
there is a user wh wants to apply for membership. AFAIK Guus created the account, but he is not getting any emails. Not the initial email with the temp password, and when he tries to reset the password he is also not getting emails. So not sure if there is a general SMTP problem, or its only related to this users email address
-
Alex
Nicfab is the username
-
Alex
Guus created is this morning
-
Zash
Can look into it in a bit
-
flow
Alex, does the user, by any chance, have an gmail address?✎ -
flow
Alex, does the user, by any chance, have a gmail address? ✏
-
Alex
flow: its not a gmail.com adress, but his address could be hosted in gapps, but I don't know. I can ask
-
flow
Gentoo's media wiki had also issues sending to gmail, the problem where mail header values which where added by the php mta implementation that google disliked (probably due wordpress spam). see https://bugs.gentoo.org/856757#c20
-
Alex
nicola said self hosted with Mailcow and usually works fine
-
flow
ok, then it's probably something different and you have to follow the mail hop-by-hop…
-
Zash
Password reset email arrives to me, so rules out breakage from the OS upgrade.
-
Zash
Guus, Alex: Could either of you forward the temporary password to them?
-
Alex
I asked him to join this channel
-
Alex
then he can send you a temp pass in private or exchange mail address
-
Alex
Zash, misread your message, yes I can
-
Guus
Sorry, I was out.
-
Alex
I also just resetted my pass and Email works for me
-
Guus
Yeah worked for me too.
-
Zash
Alex, sent you in PM
-
Guus
Thanks Alex/Zash
-
Alex
mail shows up in SPAM, but that a different issue ;-)
-
Alex
but the user checked his SPAM folders
-
Alex
anyway, send him the temp pass, and he hopefully can login now and apply. Thanks for your fast help Zash
-
Zash
Does it say why (it goes in spam)?
-
Guus
Thanks for picking this up Alex.
-
Alex
I was at the dentist early in my AM, otherwise I could have picket it up earlier 🦷
-
Alex
He just conformed that login works now and the temp pass was changed

Daniel
is nobody else (aside from the people already on the wiki) intending to go to the summit?
-
Daniel
or is everyone just waiting for the location to be confirmed?
-
flow
Unfortunately, I have to skip summit and FOSDEM this year too :( But hopefully I'll be able to join you next year again!
-
Alex
I am trying to make it. Still need to work on a schedule for it and also with my family. Sadly my new year started with COVID and messed all my schedules
-
MattJ
Maybe we won't need a room the size of Cisco...
-
Daniel
> Maybe we won't need a room the size of Cisco... that's kinda the question behind the question
-
Daniel
it's fine if people for whatever reasons don’t want to go. but if cisco falls through as an option (?) it would be good to have an idea of how many people actually want to go
-
Daniel
in previous years people often only added themselves last minute to the wiki. but that makes planning a little difficult
-
Zash
Post to the list?
-
Daniel
i think emus posted like ~10 emails over the past month. I don’t think my post will add anything to that
-
Zash
I see only one.
-
Zash
I thought there were some in December, but those are from 2020
-
Zash
Daniel, assume 2x as many and go from there?
-
Zash
Or check at what times people added themselves in the past, graph it, compare to the current trend...
-
Daniel
> Daniel, assume 2x as many and go from there? yes that's fair I guess
-
emus
Zash, Daniel: Its on the list twice I believe + calls here and media
-
emus
but in general, I follow that communication was not done well and we should have organised earlier
-
emus
I suggest 6 months ahead for next year
-
Daniel
I don’t think the communication (in terms of invites) are the problem
-
emus
Daniel: but?
-
singpolyma
> is nobody else (aside from the people already on the wiki) intending to go to the summit? If there is a remote participation option like there has sometimes been I will plan to be on that
-
Daniel
> Daniel: but? I don’t think there is a single reason. Covid being a big one probably. if not worried about getting sick it's the general uncertainty around travel
-
Daniel
i've seen plenty of people not wanting to go to fosdem either this year
-
Kev
I think if you want to get a reasonable chance of people replying, saying “please me me or the list saying you’re hoping to come” might be more effective. I, at least, haven’t been intending adding my name to the wiki until I’ve booked and am confirmed going, and I’m holding off booking to see if the promised hotel decision materialises.
-
Kev
I do think that 6 months in advance is a good aim, if it can be managed. This year it feels like everything is later than usual.
-
Link Mauve
Daniel, added myself, sorry I hadn’t done it earlier.
-
emus
Daniel: thanks for the info

> Kev: > 2023-01-12 03:25 (GMT+01:00) > I do think that 6 months in advance is a good aim, if it can be managed. This year it feels like everything is later than usual. I think arranging arround - topics - maybe even a general motto - ideas etc it makes sense. It also makes sense to gain momentum. At the point an event like fosdem is announces and get closer we are ready to book, not start planning. I did very well with this last GSoC and I am trying again. The early bird
