  1. nicoco

thanks wurstsalat for the fixes on the slidge doap inclusion for the website!

  2. wurstsalat

    nicoco: you're welcome!

  3. nicoco

I may try to add a "gateway" section when I have the time, would that be OK? slidge itself should stay a library, but at some point I will make doap files for every "slidge plugin" and give them cool names like "whatslidge" or so :). I think it's a shame that biboumi is not even listed since it's probably the best xmpp gateway out there… yakafokon (french for « someone™ should do it »)

  4. pep.

nicoco, I think that's a good idea yeah

  5. Guus

is 5443 a default value for a port used in context of XMPP anywhere?

  6. MattJ

    No

  7. MattJ

Prosody and ejabberd both use 5280/5281 for HTTP/HTTPS conventionally, but even that isn't standard or default

  8. Zash

5280 is registered with IANA for BOSH

  9. MattJ

    Ha, I didn't realize that

  10. Menel

Heh, and nobody (not many?) do bosh on unencrypted ports anymore.

  11. Zash

    Having TLS on port+1 is an old tradition, e.g 5223, 5270, and 5281 :)

  12. MattJ

Although I maintain that the XSF's primary audience is developers, we do have some user-focused stuff on our site. In fact, the primary CTA on https://xmpp.org is "Get started".

  13. MattJ

Yet we don't have a venue for users on https://xmpp.org/community/chat/

  14. MattJ

This role used to be filled by jabber@conference.jabber.org, which still exists but very quiet these days and mostly focused on jabber.org stuff when there is activity

  15. MattJ

So... should we open a venue for end-user general XMPP support?

  16. MattJ

So... should we open a venue for end-user general XMPP support?

  17. pep.

The idea of a room for users on joinjabber has been mentioned multiple times, but not many people actually expressed the desire to have it created right away and/or advertize it. Read: it's stalled and I'm not going to create it just so that we have another empty room

  18. wurstsalat

there's a semi-popular xmpp room in german, where people discuss various xmpp topics and help each other. would be nice to have that in english as well

  19. pep.

Would be nice to have one in $language for sure

  20. MattJ

The reason I'm asking right now is that I was prepping some materials for FOSDEM, and for dev-focused stuff I direct folk to the jdev web chat. For users, I don't have anything currently.

  21. MattJ

We have to assume that these people don't have XMPP set up yet, so anonymous web chat is a requirement for any venue

  22. pep.

If I'm not the only one to join I'm happy to create that room in joinjabber still.

  23. MattJ

If you do that, and can provide nice short URLs to get to the web chat (even a redirect is fine) then that definitely solves my immediate problem

  24. wurstsalat

It would surely be nice to have that chat available from a web-frontend

  25. pep.

wurstsalat, yeah we have a web thing, that seems to work (more or less, lots of red in the console) but I'm going to update right away

  26. MattJ

Perhaps somewhere we can have a page with links to support channels in different languages

  27. pep.

Personally I'm happy to have this happen in the same room. What I'd like for this is someone the jj.o community somewhat trusts that knows the language. But that's not something for me alone to decide anyway when it comes to jj.o

  28. moparisthebest

It would be great to have a user focused support room for XMPP, not jabber, so that we don't confuse anyone further imho

  29. pep.

"XMPP User Support - JoinJabber" ;)

  30. jonas’

FTR, I'd be available for hanging out in some users@muc.xmpp.org or so

  31. jonas’

    or other place

  32. MattJ

    pep. has created xmpp:support@joinjabber.org?join

  33. MattJ

When it has a convenient URL I'll add it the flyer and note that it is multilingual

  34. singpolyma

I think most large user friendly MUCs end up being used for this kind of support, but having a place to tell people about might be interesting

  35. MattJ

I hear "Point new users to the Soprani.ca general chat" :P

  36. singpolyma

Hehe. I mean, their might be a branding issue with that

  37. moparisthebest

I love all the people who join there looking for nudes etc

  38. jonas’

    what?

  39. moparisthebest

Hehe well it's the only chat in your roster when you first install cheogram and people have joined asking for nudes

  40. emus

    XMPP getting mainstream 👍

  41. moparisthebest

That or looking to buy or sell credit card numbers is always fun

  42. Menel

Ive seen non German people be confused that there is no general xmpp chatroom in English. I think it would be good

  43. Menel

They ask from time to time in the German general room and O didn't really know where to send them

  44. Menel

They ask from time to time in the German general room and I didn't really know where to send them

  45. *IM*

    > Menel: > Ive seen non German people be confused that there is no general xmpp chatroom in English. I think it would be good It's already prepared and will come soon.

  46. wurstsalat

    *IM*: it's already there support@joinjabber.org

  47. *IM*

    Ah ok.

  48. pep.

*IM*, what's the address for the german room again? We can redirect there

  49. Menel

Both are axtive: xmpp:conversations@conference.jabber.de?join And: xmpp:xmpp-de@conference.conversations.im?join

  50. moparisthebest

pep.: Do you control https://joinxmpp.org/ ? It's got an invalid certificate

  51. pep.

better now? I thought it was ok for me already

  52. moparisthebest

    Nope still invalid https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=joinxmpp.org&s=5.255.91.84&latest

  53. Zash

    > Error code: SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN

  54. pep.

    Ah joinxmpp.org, sorry

  55. Zash

    Too many domains!

  56. pep.

Yeah, that's the only two we have now though. I dropped all the others

  57. Zash

    There can be only one!

  58. pep.

Where is the place that says "body = oob is how clients know". Nowhere still? I thought this was in some CS

  59. Zash

    pep., https://docs.modernxmpp.org/client/protocol/#file-transfer

  60. Zash

    https://docs.modernxmpp.org/client/protocol/#communicating-the-url to be precise

  61. pep.

    Thanks

  62. singpolyma

It's definitely a misfeature. Though hopefully we can get fallback indication adopted instead

  63. pep.

    Yeah "there's stuff coming", hopefully
