  1. wurstsalat

does anybody know if xmpp.org's data/clients.json is used in other services? I'm planning to unify clients.json, servers.json, and libraries.json into software.json, where each entry holds a list of applicable categories. this way, we can have more categories, e.g. components, bots, tools, etc. xmpp.org would get a new presentation of software as well (WIP), where you can filter for category, OS, compliance level, and supported xeps

  2. pep.

Ask iteam to grep http logs for queries?

  3. pep.

Pages using these files on xmpp.org are computed beforehand right? If so there not even needed online. Or is it done client side?

  4. wurstsalat

    on github?

  6. pep.

    Oh

  7. wurstsalat

clients.json does not appear on xmpp.org, it's just in the repo

  8. wurstsalat

I know providers.xmpp.net uses it, but I'm also the one to make the necessary changes

  9. Daniel

Just do it. I don't think we ever promised that this file is a stable api

  10. MattJ

I say go for it, and see who complains

  11. MattJ

I set up data.xmpp.net as a home for this kind of thing, but currently it is just serving the providers JSON

  12. MattJ

I planned to add the software stuff there but haven't got around to it

  13. wurstsalat

    alright, thanks all :)

  14. Guus

the xmpp.work website has had a migration. I'd be surprised if old credentials still work, so you might need to reset them.

  15. Guus

Let me know if there's anything obviously wrong on the site, post migration. The 'service provider' section has been dropped, as it was a pain to migrate, and in my opinion added more confusion to the site than value.

  16. MattJ

Thanks! Migrated to what, out of curiosity?

  17. Guus

a different service provider, for administrative purposes.

  18. Guus

some juggling of Wordpress versions, but nothing major.

  19. jonas’

I did not want to know that was a wordpress

  20. Guus

(well, actually, I think it did include a major version number upgrade, but that was mostly coincidental)

  21. Guus

It kinda screams Wordpress by simply looking at it :)

  22. intosi

    Just a bit.

  23. jonas’

I didn't see that, but now I cannot unsee, especially the footer ;)

  24. Guus

If it were in a SCM, I'd welcome your pull requests. :)

  25. jonas’

    no, thanks

  26. jonas’

I don't do frontend, and I didn't mean to judge. There are just things I prefer to not know :-)

  27. Guus

"I don't do frontend" probably is what is generically lacking in XMPP most.

  28. jonas’

    I tend to agree

  29. Guus

but hey, if anyone wants to help out: post some jobs. They're fairly easy to find through tools like https://www.linkedin.com/jobs - just takes some time to copy/paste things. If you work for a company that has positions, even better.

  30. Seve

Guus: do you know how to find remote XMPP jobs on LinkedIn? Or XMPP at least

  31. antranigv

Oh I remember when I found mine like 10 years ago.

  32. antranigv

    Well technically they found me

  33. antranigv

But i had xmpp and FreeBSD in my “linkedin page”

  34. antranigv

    They had no indicator :/

  35. antranigv

@seve sometimes companies use XMPP and we’d never know.

  36. Guus

Seve, I don't. I'd guess that jobs with an XMPP characteristic are harder to find than those that have a 'remote' characteristic. I would suggest to searching for XMPP, then manually filtering for remote jobs (or even reach out, to ask).

  37. Peter Waher

@seve: Let’s connect over LinkedIn, and if you could, mail me a one-pager.

  38. emus

MattJ: would love to actually have it as work.xmpp.net

  39. emus

I'd also prefer to see the website in hugo rendered, Id say that ties in with the general infrastructure

  40. Guus

emus, are you talking about xmpp.work?

  41. emus

    Guus: yes

  42. Daniel

I reckon there is no specified order of reflected self presence and my own PEP notifications? Or some other indication that I can use to know that all pep events that I want (from myself) have been sent

  43. Guus

emus: what is the benefit of changing the domain name?

  44. emus

I just tend to move have less fragmentation in communication & where things are. do you we the domain actually?

  45. Guus

emus: moving to Hugo will take a lot more effort than that I am willing to put into that site, at least until it starts seeing some usage / content.

  46. Guus

That domain has been used since its inception, years ago.

  47. emus

Guus: I know, but maybe one day wurstsalat is motivated to do so and/or we make it via fiscal hosting

  48. emus

    > Guus: > 2023-01-31 06:32 (GMT+01:00) > That domain has been used since its inception, years ago. ok cool

  49. Guus

Hosting isn't a problem. I don't see a need for it to be inlined with other services, from that perspective. That will only add to the workload of the volunteers that are already doing a lot. As for theming: improvements can definitely be made, but it is low on my priority list. I'd much rather invest in having actual content: job listings. That said, I bet that theming can be changed relatively easily (and in a portable manner) by creating a dedicated WordPress theme. Not something that I plan to work on, but knowhow on how to create WP themes is widespread. Should be easy for someone motivated to get started with. It's probably a lower bar than recreating the site with Hugo.

  50. wurstsalat

If it's working as intended, I don't think migrating the page is time well-spent. There are better places to spend time on :)

  51. Guus

Woah. Cat Allman was laid off by Google?

  52. Guus

    As is Chris DiBona?

  53. MattJ

    😕

  54. pep.

Well, 12k people got laid off by Google

  55. pep.

    Recently, I mean

  56. MattJ

Sure. It's certainly bad for anyone (at any organization - Google isn't the only one) an individual level. At the organization level, it provides some insight into current priorities.

  58. stpeter

From a Schumpeterian perspective, I look forward to what the folks laid off by these big tech companies will help create in better organizations than the ones they’ve left behind. That doesn’t make it any easier for these folks personally, of course, and I feel bad for people like Cat and Chris (both of whom I’ve worked with over the years).
