  1. Trung

As the new guy, my gratitue goes to the people who have voted for letting me “officially” be part of the XMPP community. To the people who voted agaisnt me: 😊 With this title, hopefully I will have a better chance of spreading this interesting sounding protocol in my nation. No promise.

  2. Trung

oh and special thanks to Alex who help me out on setting up that wiki page!

    welcome :D

Gajim can play mp3, but not wav. And Monal can play wav, but not mp3. I guess neither has a bug really, but voice clips are not close to being feasible :c

  8. Zash

    Interoperability \o/

  9. Guus

We must invent a new media format to replace them all. <insert appropriate XKCD link here>

  10. Peter Waher

That’s why you have multi-format audio, video and img tags in HTML5 by comparison, to allow the recipient to choose the format they support (best). cf. our earlier discussion about sending messages containing multiple formats, allowing the recipient to choose the format they best support. Also: We should assume formats and support for formats evolve and change over time. So, instead of fixing a specific format, a loosely coupled abstraction layer would be nice.

  11. Zash

We might have some codec recommendations in the context of Jingle somewhere, dunno if those are considered for OOB'd audio clips

  12. Zash

    Is .wav even compressed?

  13. L29Ah

there is compressed .wav but you'd better consider it's not

  14. Zash

    https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0266.html

  15. L29Ah

    no AAC :O

  16. L29Ah

    ah it's for voice

  17. Zash

    > Version 1.1rc1 (2013-03-01) release candidate? for a decade?

  18. singpolyma

    > We must invent a new media format to replace them all. <insert appropriate XKCD link here> Already done, it's called opus

  19. jonas’

    opus? for video? :>

  20. Zash

    ITYM ogg?

  21. jonas’

    ogg is a container

  22. MattJ

    I think you meant MP4

  23. singpolyma

jonas’: the context was audio clips. But opus is used for the audio track of webm video yes

  24. MattJ

Nerd sniping is so easy here

  25. singpolyma

Video or much closer to universal than it used to be, but opus for audio has better adoption than any single video codec

  26. singpolyma

Video is much closer to universal than it used to be, but opus for audio has better adoption than any single video codec

  27. Kev

So we're talking about Vorbis, right?

  28. singpolyma

lol, I don't think anyone is ever talking about vorbis

  29. Zash

You're talking about Vorbis right now! :D

  30. Kev

Quick, no-one think about a pink elephant.

  31. Guus

ah, reading up on Vorbis made me aware that it has a relation to XMPP through Jack Moffitt

  32. Kev

    Indeed :)

  33. Guus

TIL. Got to keep up for that eventual title of TriviaL Pursuit Conquering Hero Extraordinaire

  34. Guus

(If learning about a decade old fact qualifies as 'keeping up')

  35. moparisthebest

Opus is a good choice for voice, but mp3 is free now and ok, wav... That's just a huge waste of bandwidth for no reason

  36. singpolyma

Voice, music (if lossy is ok), anything. That's why it's so popular

  37. moparisthebest

And if you don't want lossy then flac

  38. singpolyma

    Yup

  39. Zash

I hear you can put mp3 into wav. Where is your glob now?

  40. wurstsalat

    > Gajim can play mp3, but not wav. And Monal can play wav, but not mp3. I guess neither has a bug really, but voice clips are not close to being feasible :c it can play wav as well. mime type guessing is a bit awkward though sometimes
