  2. moparisthebest

Why didn't anyone inform me that XMPP was dead?? ;)

  3. Daniel

    wait XMPP is dead?

  4. Zash

And that it was Facebook that killed it???

  5. Zash

What is dead may never die!

  6. goffi

    this is after-life

  7. edhelas

We're all dead but we don't know yet 👻

  8. moparisthebest

    > this is after-life Ok that makes sense, obviously XMPP would be used in heaven

  9. Zash

    > Ok that makes sense, obviously XMPP would be used in heaven And because there is no pain in heaven, nobody notices how sharp the angle brackets are :)

  11. emus

actually, as its about the methodogly of killing a network its good for the newsletter right?

  12. goffi

yes it's definitely a fit for the newsletter IMHO

  13. emus

we can also add matts comment

  14. MattJ

FWIW my comment wasn't a comment on the blog post, I hadn't even read it

  15. MattJ

I started drafting in my head days before the post was published, so it was just unfortunate timing

  16. goffi

which comment are you talking about? I've missed that

  17. Zash

    Referring to https://floss.social/@mattj/110595483224579575 I believe?

  18. goffi

I've missed this one indeed, reading it now, thanks!

  19. emus

    > MattJ: > 2023-06-24 04:06 (GMT+02:00) > I started drafting in my head days before the post was published, so it was just unfortunate timing ah ok

  20. emus

MattJ: maybe put it into a blogpost :-)

  21. vanitasvitae

So have we now been murdered by Google or not?? I'm confused

  22. emus

    vanitasvitae: yes, both :-)

  23. Axel R.

    > So have we now been murdered by Google or not?? I'm confused vanitasvitae: Thanks. You made my day. 😃

  24. goffi

looks like that we are now a Schrödinger's chat

  25. vanitasvitae

    😀

  26. MattJ

emus [15:29]: > MattJ: maybe put it into a blogpost :-) It started as a blog post, but the blog post grew to several pages long and it still wasn't finished 😅

  27. MattJ

But it covers more stuff, so I'll probably post it one day (as a whole, or split it up somehow)

  28. emus

    Ok, take your time

  29. Zash

Does anyone else get the feeling that these "Google killed XMPP" posts are subtly altering history?

  30. singpolyma

    I think it's history remembered with a today-coloured lens

  31. singpolyma

If anything, AOL killed XMPP in that story ;)

  32. Zash

Feels bad to read about XMPP in the past tense :(

  33. singpolyma

But you see the same with "smartphones killed XMPP" posts

  34. singpolyma

Or "too many xeps killed xmpp" posts. Etc

  35. Zash

    > Nice new features were not implemented or not used in XMPP clients because they were not compatible with Google Talk (avatars took an awful long time to come to XMPP). Don't vcard-temp predate GTalk by years?

  36. singpolyma

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I had an avatar in psi in 2004

  37. Zash

And a bunch of other posts on the fedirverse talk like it was Facebook turning off their federation(?!) that killed XMPP?

  38. Zash

... but they never had federation

  39. singpolyma

Haha. Yes, lots of people grossly misremember the "Facebook XMPP" thing

  40. singpolyma

    As if it ever existed

  41. Zash

Oh it did, but it was c2s only.

  42. singpolyma

If it had actually existed I bet Google talk would still be with us

  43. Zash

Their federation was over email, but I don't think I ever heard anyone ever mention that

  44. singpolyma

Since Google users talking to Facebook users is a motivating reason to keep it on

  45. singpolyma

    Facebook killed email! EEE

  46. singpolyma

    > Oh it did, but it was c2s only. And was only a partial bridge. It ever worked well or supported all features. Was basically a demo

  47. singpolyma

    > Oh it did, but it was c2s only. And was only a partial bridge. It never worked well or supported all features. Was basically a demo

  48. Zash

Just the chat feature, like GTalk. I had it in my N900 IIRC.

  49. singpolyma

The basics of the chat feature. GTalk it was everything they supported (chat, formatting, voice and video) because there wasn't a second protocol in behind it was proxying to

  50. singpolyma

I used it also, but it was never as nice as gtalk. And of course no s2s so not really relevant to that discussion anyway

  51. Zash

    Right

  52. emus

    WhatApp did?

  53. Zash

    Dang XMPP, it killed XMPP!!
