Has there been any discussion here about the new Threads social network? I am curious about the section "Compatible with Interoperable Networks " in here: https://about.instagram.com/blog/announcements/threads-instagram-text-feature They could place ads in the app and monetize it somehow, arguing that its the best "client" out there, for example. And I assume most of their users would not care if there's federation or not, but still I wonder why such a company would now be apparently taking some steps towards it?

There's been too many mentions of Threads and Facebook lately on Mastodon, I'm getting annoyed :x Basically my whole TL is defederating them, which is good.

also, why spend resources on supporting a different protocol than MLS/MIMI/whatchamacallit that's gonna be de-facto mandatory to implement interop in their other platforms? a protocol that doesn't have e2ee messaging, and, from what I gather, a very rudimentary IM support
