XSF Discussion - 2023-11-23

  1. Ackerschnacker

Hello, where is a good place (room) to talk about XMPP HF and FM radio transmission? We are looking for a solution for a volunteer project in Germany (THW). Thank you in advance.

  2. Guus

Sure, and welcome. Strictly speaking, this is a room mostly about protocols and less about implementation, but lines get blurry easily. You could seek additional feedback from the jdev chatroom (more development oriented).

  3. MSavoritias fae.ve

    jdev@muc.xmpp.org this one

  4. Kev

XMPP over HF is a question of protocol as well as software ;)

  5. Ackerschnacker

    MSavoritias fae.ve Thanks

  6. Ackerschnacker

Guus Thank you. I'll rephrase it and want to add one or two more graphics for better explanation.

  7. emus

Ackerschnacker: happy to hear more about the project if you have resources

  8. goffi

Hey, I'm happy to announce that I've got a grant to work on a email <=> XMPP gateway: https://nlnet.nl/project/EmailXMPPgateway/ .

I've not mentioned it because it was not yet accepted when we have been talking about discourse, but one of the goal is to bridge mailing lists to Pubsub with a forum-like UI. Thus, this could be used to have a user-friendly interface on top of XSF mailing lists, without touching at the current architecture.

  12. moparisthebest

    goffi: did you see https://smtp.cheogram.com/

  13. mathieui

    goffi, congrats

  15. goffi

moparisthebest: yes, and the way I see it it's not the same goals, even if there is some overlapping. The project I'll work on will include UI/UX improvments on Libervia itself, proposal for e2ee support, advanced attachements handling, and a focus on mailing list/pubsub conversion.

  16. goffi

emus: sure, I'll make a blog post and add something in the newsletter draft.

  17. moparisthebest

    e2e support for email?

  18. goffi

  19. goffi

    for gateways in general.

  20. moparisthebest

But like, not compatible with existing email e2e ?

  21. moparisthebest

    Autocrypt/delta chat etc?

  22. emus

  23. goffi

yes it would be compatible with existing email e2e (PGP, autocrypt)

  24. Guus

Hey goffi, congrats! In what batch was your proposal? I'm awaiting feedback of my own :P

  25. moparisthebest

  26. goffi

not sure about delta chat, but I think that it would be compatible automagically as it is using autocrypt.

  27. moparisthebest

    Yes I think so

  28. goffi

Guus: august, NGI0 core, will be announced officially tomorrow.

  29. Guus

goffi: ah thanks - I'm in the October batch.

  30. goffi

Ah yes be patient, it's quite long

  31. Guus

  32. root

goffi: congrats! And this definitely sounds interesting!

  33. edhelas

    > goffi: ah thanks - I'm in the October batch. Waiting for my answer as well. Big big project :)

  34. singpolyma

    > e2e support for email? Yes, I plan this too but haven't done it yet. Deltachat guys especially want it

  35. debacle

Ackerschnacker Is this about chat/IM use case of XMPP or something else? E.g. for IoT there is xmpp:iot@muc.xmpp.org?join
