XSF Discussion - 2024-01-25

  1. dcz

hi! I'd like to attend the summit - curious about the current state of XMPP and especially if there are any pubkey auth projects

  2. dcz

    test

  3. MattJ

    Hi dcz

  4. dcz

oh, sorry, the message came with a long delay

  5. MattJ

The registration deadline for the summit has already passed, but we can probably work something out

  6. MattJ

I'm not aware of any pubkey auth projects, if I understand what you mean. Many clients and servers support certificate authentication, but it tends to only be used in certain kinds of deployments, not on the public network.

  7. dcz

I think you understood me right. Passkeys are going to create a push, and it would be a shame if XMPP was following the trends rather than setting them

  8. MattJ

If you mean things like passkeys, then you'll be interested in the talk I gave at last year's FOSDEM: https://archive.fosdem.org/2023/schedule/event/modern_xmpp_auth/

  9. dcz

    nice, thanks!

  10. dcz

as for my attendance, I'm mostly curious about the community and the topics, so I don't think I would need to stay for many sessions to get a feel

  11. Kev

It's not a conference with sessions, it's everyone sit in a room and discuss how to produce new protocol/use existing protocol to solve new problems, mostly.

  12. Kev

If you turn up expecting a normal conference, you might be disappointed.

  13. Zash

Perhaps visiting the booth at FOSDEM would be better?

  14. MattJ

The format is 2 days of everyone in a room, discussing things. Topics we want to talk about and a rough schedule is determined on the first morning

  15. Kev

    > Perhaps visiting the booth at FOSDEM would be better? It somewhat sounds that way.

  16. dcz

I wouldn't be able to contribute much to an intense dscussion outside of my narrow interests, so maybe visiting the booth is indeed the way

  17. MattJ

You're definitely welcome to attend the summit if we can fit you in past the deadline, but as Kev pointed out, we don't want you to be disappointed or bored if you're hoping for accessible presentations

  18. MattJ

If you're hoping to get more involved in the community and protocol development, the summit is the place to be. If you just want to casually chat XMPP, FOSDEM is a good venue for that (many of us will be there to answer questions and talk about whatever you're interested in)

  19. dcz

if only FOSDEM was earlier so I could get a first impression before committing ;)

  20. singpolyma

Summit is basically the mailing list but live

  21. Kev

We used to do it the other way around, I don't remember why we changed.

  22. Kev

ISTR we used to do the Monday, then we changed to doing Friday and Monday, then we did Thursday and Friday. Maybe I misremember, though.

  23. Kev

    > Summit is basically the mailing list but live That's a good description :)

  24. dcz

anyway, if it's a hassle for you to add an extra person, then don't worry. I just wanted to have the option of going and checking out the discussions without needing to stress

  25. Kev

    > if only FOSDEM was earlier so I could get a first impression before committing ;) You can potentially remote participate/listen in, if you don't want to commit much.

  26. dcz

remote doesn't relly work IME, and I'm there anyway

  27. Kev

Remote participation is hard work. Remote listening works pretty well, IME, although I've not done it for years.

  28. Daniel

'Device management' is actually something I'd be interested in making a topic at the summit. (essentially MattJ talk but specs this time). Now that we have bind 2 / sasl 2 in place this would be the logical next step. I do agree though that if you are not an xmpp developer or a spec author the summit is probably too nitty-gritty

  29. Kev

I realised this week that I didn't write up either of the protoXEPs that no-one else wanted to write after the last Summit so I said I would :/

  30. MattJ

I don't even remember what they were now, so you got away with it

  31. Kev

Although I think there were other things going to be written that weren't written either, so maybe that's just A Thing.

  32. Kev

I was going to write up the MAM Collation notes, and I *think* that Spaces got dropped on me, too.

  33. Kev

I've tried to find my spaces notes a few times and failed.

  34. Guus

    Well, you've still got a week, I suppose? :)

  35. singpolyma

Until there is code to support either a full protoxep may be premature anyway

  36. Kev

I don't have the time I used to have for these things :/

  37. Zash

I'll just leave this here: https://modules.prosody.im/mod_client_management.html#protocol
