    I think ME was asking whether there are any willing projects they can contribute to, not that they have a project open for volunteers

    It may be better to contact a specific project you're interested in to see whether they are willing/able (or you can convince them) - check https://xmpp.org/software/ for potential projects

    How it works: you work over the summer as an intern on a proposed coding task for a project, someone from the project has to supervise/guide you, and you're paid by Google for the duration
